The City of Ararat was a Local Government Area located about 200 kilometres (124 mi) west-northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of 19.09 square kilometres (7.4 sq mi), and existed from 1858 until 1994. It was surrounded by the separate and largely rural Shire of Ararat.
[edit] History
Ararat was first incorporated as a borough on 24 September 1858, and became a town on 29 May 1934. It was proclaimed as a city on 24 May 1950, and received some land from the surrounding Shire of Ararat on 27 May 1960. Ararat declared itself the Orchid City and hosted an annual festival dedicated to the cymbidium.[2]
The City of Ararat was not subdivided into wards, and the nine councillors represented the entire area.
On 23 September 1994, the City was abolished, and merged with Shire of Ararat and part of the Shire of Stawell into the Rural City of Ararat.[3]
