City Gardens was a Legendary Punk/Alternative Rock/Indie Club located at 1700 Calhoun Street in Trenton, New Jersey showcasing numerous artists during the 70's, 80's and 90's until it's demise in the mid 1990's. City Gardens hosted many struggling bands as they were coming up who later went on to stardom. Bands that have played there have included Nirvana, R.E.M., Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Ramones, The Rollins Band, Sonic Youth,Nine Inch Nails, and Green Day to name a few.
R.E.M.'s Peter Buck was quoted in the book "Remarks" by Tony Fletcher that sitting in the band's van outside of City Gardens watching children play football was part of the feeling that inspired their song "Perfect Circle". Long time City Gardens booking agent Randy Ellis has been quoted as saying that Nirvana played City Gardens to a surprising audience of about 30. Nirvana performed at City Gardens right after the release of the legendary album Nevermind, and just weeks prior to the album exploding on the pop charts and making Nirvana a household name.
