City Vision College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rescue College was established in 1998 as the Internet-based distance education training program of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, based in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2008, the association deeded the college to TechMission and it was renamed "City Vision College." Still, the mission and vision of the college, along with curriculum, faculty, and administration has stayed essentially the same.

The AGRM was established in 1913 as the "International Union of Gospel Missions" and is made up of 300 rescue missions and other inner city ministries. Preparing Christian workers for services has always been a major focus of the association with both the "On the Job" training program and the Leadership Training Program operating from the mid 40's. The direction of formal academic training began in 1990 with the development of a joint degree program in Rescue Ministry with Grace College of the Bible (now called Grace University).

The college has been accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council since 2005. Its mission is to prepare men and women for successful careers with rescue missions and other nonprofit organizations, particularly those working with the homeless and needy.

With enrollment open year round, students may participate in programs leading to a certificate or Bachelor of Arts degree in Missions with an urban ministry emphasis. Individual courses may also be taken for personal enrichment and professional development.

The City Vision College curriculum is a unique distance learning experience that incorporates the actual operations of a rescue mission or other approved nonprofit organization as both "laboratory" and "classroom." Students spend approximately 2-4 hours per week in online learning activities. The rest of the course work involves directed observation, analysis, data gathering, and evaluation of various aspects of an urban mission's operations.

The independent study component includes:

  • Assigned readings
  • Listening to audio tapes
  • Preparing written research projects
  • Proctored examinations
  • On-line discussion and collaboration with other students and faculty members
  • And, other guided learning experiences
