[edit] History

City College first opened in August 1935; the Ocean Avenue campus opened 1940.[1][2]

[edit] Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community

CCSF established the first gay, lesbian, and bisexual studies department in the U.S. (1989), teaching courses in Queer Studies.

Currently, there is a Queer Alliance student group and a Queer Resource Center on campus. The Queer Resource Center is an academic and informational resource center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, intersex, questioning, and straight allies.[3] The Queer Resource Center aims to empower and celebrate its demographic as well as its community.[4] The center has participated in anti-violence, anti-homophobia, and anti-transphobia rallies and workshops.[5] The center has struggled with funding although this has caught the attention of politicians, notably the Green Party, whose candidate for board of trustees John Rizzo has promised funds for more LGBT studies and the Queer Resource Center.[6]

[edit] Women

CCSF was the first college to offer women training as aircraft mechanics,[citation needed] and established one of the first Women's Studies programs in the nation.[7]

On campus, there are numerous student activity groups, gender-specific courses, and health services. For example, the Women's Resource Center and Library (Smith Hall, 103-104) offers women on campus an opportunity to network with academic support services and resources, and Project Survive is a campus peer education group working to promote healthy relationships and end abuse and sexual violence.[8]

[edit] Hotel and restaurant management programs

Founded in 1936, the program is the oldest two-year hospitality program in the country and oldest of any kind emphasizing culinary arts, with an annual average enrollment of 200 international students.[9]

[edit] Administration

The district for City College is an independent co-extensive with the City and County of San Francisco. Its Board of Trustees is elected by San Francisco residents. District funds are allocated from the state legislature, local property taxes, student tuition and fees, lottery funds, sales tax funds, and miscellaneous sources. The district's programs are certified by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

[edit] Murals at the Ocean Campus

A large mural, Pan American Unity, created in 1940 by Diego Rivera is exhibited in the theatre lobby, and may be viewed during open hours or at The Diego Rivera Mural Project web site.[12] Also, the student union building's front façade is painted with a large multicultural mural titled "Song of the Spirit."
