Città Italiana, Montreal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Citta Italiana is the nickname given to the Montreal borough of St. Leonard, Quebec because of its large number of Italian-Canadians residents. Città Italiana is often considered Montreal's second Little Italy. This is quite evident on major streets such as the eastern portion of Jean-Talon Boulevard, locally referred to as Via Italia, and Jarry Street where Italian-Canadian businesses are located. Many Italian cultural centres, such as the The Leonardo Da Vinci Centre, are located in Saint Leonard. Its services are offered in English, French and Italian. This cultural building contains theaters, gyms, bocce playing areas, and a cafe. There are 260,345 people of Italian ancestry living within the Greater Montreal Area.[1]
[edit] Via Italia
Between Viau and Langelier Boulevards, Jean-Talon Boulevard passes through the heart of Città Italiana as is nicknamed Via Italia. It is home to many Italian-Canadian businesses as runs through the largest Italian-Canadian community in Montreal. Via Italia was "party central" when the Italian National Soccer Team won the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
