The SR22, by Cirrus Design, is a high-performance single-engine, four-seat, composite aircraft. It is a more powerful version of the Cirrus SR20, with a larger wing, higher fuel capacity, and a 310 horsepower (231 kW) engine. It is extremely popular among purchasers of new aircraft and has been the world's best-selling single-engine, four-seat aircraft for several years.[1] Like the Cessna 400, but unlike most other high-performance aircraft, the SR22 has fixed (non-retractable) landing gear.
The plane is perhaps best known for being equipped with the Cirrus Aircraft Parachute System (CAPS), an emergency parachute capable of lowering the entire aircraft (and occupants) to the ground in an emergency.

In 2007 Cirrus Design unveiled the third generation of the SR22 model. This upgrade includes over 700 design changes to the previous G2 version including:
- Wing design lightened by 50 lb (23 kg)
- Wider center of gravity envelope
- Increased fuel capacity to 92 gallons (348 liters) usable in a wet-wing
- Higher landing gear by 2 inches
- New wingtip LED recognition lights
- Revised control system, including control de-coupling and increased dihedral
- Improved wing root fairings
- Improved TKS weeping wing ice protection system
- More effective ventilation and cooling systems
- Air conditioning now available on the turbo model[2]
[edit] Turbo option
The SR22 turbo uses a Tornado Alley turbonormalizing upgrade kit featuring twin turbonormalizers and twin intercoolers.[3] The turbo conversion will allow pilots to fly higher, faster, and farther. The Cirrus SR22 Turbo installation is similar to that in the Mooney Acclaim and the Cessna 400. Also included with the conversion is built-in oxygen and a Hartzell 3-blade light weight composite propeller. The weight of the conversion will reduce the SR22's useful load. Air conditioning is available with the SR22 Turbo, but this further reduces the useful load. The turbo version has a certified ceiling of 25,000 feet, a maximum cruise speed of 211 knots (391 km/h), and a top speed of 219 knots.[4] This is 23 knots slower than the Mooney Acclaim, the fastest plane in this category (piston-powered propeller with turbocharged engine.)[5][6][7][8]
[edit] Glass cockpit upgrading
SR22s that were built before 2003 were not equipped with the Avidyne Entegra primary flight display that was standard equipment on latter SR22 model years. These aircraft have seen their values fall as the result of this deficiency and in 2007 typically sold for USD$75,000 less than aircraft equipped with a PFD. Avidyne have developed a program to make available a retrofit of an equivalent PFD, called the Avidyne Envision. Installations will be carried out at local avionics shops under a Supplementary type certificate developed by Southern Star Avionics of Mobile, Alabama in concert with Avidyne. Retrofits will involve replacing existing instrument panels with a new one that will include the PFD, a new multifunction display and the installation of back-up mechanical instruments. The base cost for the upgrade will be USD$50,000 for the installation of the PFD, plus the cost of a new MFD and other extras such as TCAS, weather or charting upgrades.[9]
