The Circle of Greater Powers consists of all the greater gods in the AD&D Forgotten Realms theological pantheon. Created by Lord Ao, the greater gods have a duty to preserve the balance between Chaos and Order. The Circle of Greater Powers have always come together to meet for important reasons such as the capture of Kezef the Chaos Hound for the preservation of the balance or for the trial of another god for not carrying out the duty under their portfolio such as the trial for Cyric the Mad.
[edit] Summary
The Circle of Greater Powers was a coalition of the greater gods in Faerun from various alignments with different duties and portfolios.
The pre-Time of Troubles Circle of Greater Powers consists of Akadi, Bane, Bhaal, Chauntea, Grumbar, Istishia, Kossuth, Lathander, Myrkul, Mystra, Oghma, Shar, Silvanus, Sune, Talos, Tempus, Tyr and Ubtao.
The post Time of Trouble Circle saw a number of changes in the ranks of the Greater Gods. At the start of the Troubles, Mystra was killed by Helm when she tried to ascent the stairway to the Planes. The Dead Three lost their place in the Circle of Greater Powers when they were wiped out. Bane was supposedly killed in his fight with Torm at Tantras in his bid to retrieve the Tablets of Fate. Bhaal was killed by Cyric with the help of Godsbane, Cyric's sword which was actually an avatar of Mask. Myrkul lost his life to Midnight at Waterdeep.
The portfolio of Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul as well as Leira was taken over by Cyric. However, the portfolio of Myrkul was then taken over by Kelemvor when he overthrew Cyric with the help of the denizens and shades of Hades. The portfolio of Mystra was held by Midnight, one of the three mortals who was chosen by Lord Ao to be lifted to godhood.
