Cipriano José Barata de Almeida (Bahia, 1762 - Natal, 1838), was a Brazilian politician and revolutionary. Despite studying medicine at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, most of his life was dedicated to revolutionary activities.

Barata became a deputy for the colonial Province of Bahia, and was in Lisbon during Brazil's separation from Portugal in 1822. After returning to Brazil he resided in Pernambuco, and continued to his intense political activity via his left winged newspaper Sentinela da Liberdade.

He later became involved in the formation of the failed Confederation of the Equator in 1824. In contrast to other leaders as Frei Caneca, whose concerns they were heavily concentration in a political nature, Barata also concerned himself with social reforms, and defended the abolition of the slavery. After the Confederation capitulated in November of that year, he was detained at Forte de Brum, and sent to Rio de Janeiro. Years later he abandoned his interests in politics, and spent the remainder of his life at Natal.
