Cibola High School is an Albuquerque Public School high school located at 1510 Ellison Drive on the westside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was overcrowded as of 2006, and was the largest public high school in the state of New Mexico with more than 3000 students. This will change in the Fall of 2007 with the opening of Volcano Vista High School. Volcano Vista will open to just freshmen in 2007 taking a portion of Cibola's incoming freshman class. The opening of Volcano Vista will reduce Cibola's size further in the 2008-09 school year when they add sophomore and junior students to their high school. The current principal is Elena Salazar. Salazar replaced former principal Grace Brown who took a job with Los Alamos High School in July 2007.
[edit] Sports and Activities
Cibola is notable for its football program, which in 2006 went 10-3, a school record, and made it to the semi-finals where they lost to the Alamogordo Tigers. Also in 2006, their JV and freshmen football teams ended their schedules undefeated and Albuquerque city champs. Cibola had not gone to the semi-finals since 1985. The 2007 Cibola Varsity Football team went 10-2 losing to eventual state champions, Mayfield HS, in the semifinals.
Cibola High School is also home to a noted mock trial team. Originally starting in the late 80's, Cibola has grown to become tough competitors in their State and Regional divisions. Since taking over as coaches, Mr. Marvin Romero and Mr. David Berlin have helped their team reach the National Championships twice where they placed 25th and 13th(the highest place by any APS school at that time). In the summer of 2007, the mock trial’s A-Team went to the Empire City Invitational in New York where they not only won several outstanding attorney and witness awards, but placed first in the competition as well. The mock trial team also had an outstanding run in 2008, losing only once in the Regional competition, getting 2nd place and moving on to the State competition. At State, they managed to take all 10 ballots in the first two rounds putting them into the championship round with Sandia High School, the State Champion from the previous year. The team did place second at state losing to Sandia, who earned a 4th place finish at the National Competition.
One of Cibola's most popular groups is a sketch comedy group by the name of S-Troupe. S-Troupe is an organization of writers, performers, and artists dedicated to the production and performance of original, expressive, written work. Simply put: the members of S-Troupe write, produce and, finally, perform their own poetic, dramatic, but mostly comedic scenes and sketches on stage or on video and film. Founded at Cibola High School in 2005 by Mr. Travis Lytle, S-Troupe is also committed to promoting writing and literacy through outreach programs to local elementary and middle schools. When was it established i dont know
[edit] Notable Alumni
Alvin Joiner is known as the rap/hip-hop artist Xzibit. He's had a role in Eminem's movie, "8 Mile," and a guest spot on the TV series "CSI Miami." And now he is the host of MTV's wildly popular "Pimp My Ride," an extreme makeover program for cars.
He attended Chaparral Elementary School, John Adams Middle School, and West Mesa High School— until he got shot out in the 11th grade. He enrolled in Valley High School and got kicked out there, too. Likewise for the alternative Freedom High School and Cibola High School.
