Chuvash State University (The I. N. (Il'ia Nikolaevich) Ulianov Chuvash State University) is the main university of Chuvashia (or the Chuvash Republic) and is located in Cheboksary, the capital of the Republic (Population 450,000), on the Volga River northeast of Moscow.

The university has over 10,000 students and 3. 865 faculty, including 77 Doctors of Sciences (equivalent to Full Professors) and 446 Candidates of Sciences (equivalent to PhDs).

The university was formed on 17 August 1967 through a conglomeration of the Volga Branch of the Moscow of the Order of Lening Energy Institute and the Historical-Philological Department of the I. Ya. Yakovlev Chuvash State Pedogocial Institute. It is named after Il'ia Nikolaevhich Ulianov, an educator.

The rector of the university is Lev Panteleimonovich Kurakov. He was previously the President of the Chuvash Academy of Sciences (1992-1994) amd a member of the Federal Council (the upper house of the Federal Assembly) of the Russian Federation. From 1997-2002, he was Vice President of the Chuvash Republic. He has been a member of the faculty of ChSU since 1969, and became rector of the university in 1990.
