[edit] History

The school was founded in 1957 and accommodated around 350 pupils, drawn from the surrounding areas including those of the schools it replaced and as far afield as Totnes. Its first HeadMaster, Donald W. Carter, prior to the opening of the Churaton Ferrers school was head of the Dartmouth Grammar School which closed at the same time. He led the school until 1972 when he retired. During his headship, he created the goals and traditions that have launched the school towards the Humanities College it is today.

[edit] Buildings

The school has occupied its current buildings since opening and was largely unchanged for the first half of its existence. When the school expanded in the late 1980s it added a new classroom block and sports facility. The school is currently waiting for the remainder of financial grants to commence the building of the new proposed humanities block including a library, I.T rooms and additional classrooms.

[edit] 50th Anniversary

2007 is the semicentenary of the school's opening in 1957. To celebrate this, it is holding a 1950s day for current pupils and original staff and pupils on Friday 12 October. There will also be an open day for all current and former staff and pupils on Saturday 13 October.

[edit] Academic Houses

School houses are Abbot (A), Coombe (C), Ferrers (F) and Tor (T). Houses and non-streamed classes correspond; for example someone in year 7 and Tor House would be in class 7T. Pupils' houses (and therefore classes) are determined alphabetically by their surname with roughly the first quarter of pupils alphabetically joining Abbot house, and so on.

Students are also organised into year groups in which they are then sorted into one of the four forms. Each form has its own appointed form tutor as well as the whole year having a Head of Year. This is the list of staff appointed.

[edit] Academic status

Partly as a result of its selective intake, the school features favourably in the school league tables results. There are currently around 850 pupils, including a 240 in the sixth form and it is heavily over-subscribed.

Currently in the 2005/2006 Ofsted inspection, Churston Ferrers Grammar School gained an overall "Outstanding" report. Every subject area in the entire school received the mark of Outstanding making Churston a truly remarkable school in all aspects of education.

The school had an enthusiastic debating society which would regularly debate the issues of the day in its lecture theatre.

The school is one of the few in the state sector to run a Combined Cadet Force.

[edit] Trivia

  • In 1985 the school was closed to 5th and upper sixth form pupils on what would have been the last school day before O and A levels in order to prevent a repeat of the previous year's celebrations which had resulted in damage to the school building. This mostly unremarkable event became somewhat notorious on being reported as the lead story on the front page of the 24 May 1985 edition of the local newspaper, the Herald Express.
  • Former headmaster John Parsons and alumnus Andy Parsons are father and son.
