Chukwu

Chukwu is the supreme deity in traditional Igbo mythology. The name is a portmanteau of the Ibo word for God ("Chi") and the Igbo word for big or great ("ukwu"). Chukwu is the creator in their pantheon and the Igbo people believe that all things come from Chukwu. Chukwu brings the rains necessary for plants to grow. Everything on earth, heaven and the rest of the spiritual world is under the control of Chukwu.
There is no concept of a gender type such as "man" or "woman" associated with the Igbo supreme deity Chukwu; no words in the Igbo language categorize Chukwu as either male or female.
Colonialism introduced European Christianity to the Igbo people. The name Chukwu is also applied to the Christian God today, as many Igbo people have converted to Christianity in modern times.
