Charles "Chuck" Bresnahan (born September 8, 1960 in Springfield, Massachusetts) is the former defensive coordinator for the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals. Bresnahan (pronounced "BREZ-nuh-han") joined the Bengals coaching staff in 2004 as an assistant coach, and was promoted to defensive coordinator on January 9, 2005. He was fired in January, 2008 after his team went 7-9 in the regular season. Prior to joining the Bengals, Bresnahan coached in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and with the Oakland Raiders where he was their defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2003.[1] He was fired from the Bengals on January 2, 2008. Many people believe that this happened because of negative comments by quarterback Carson Palmer, while others believe it was due to Bresnahan's defenses being consistently ranked in the bottom five of the entire NFL. During Bresnahan's tenure, the Bengals ranked 28th, 30th, and 25th in yards allowed, out of 32 teams. [2] Bresnahan's father Tom Bresnahan, was a longtime football coach, where he spent sixteen years as an NFL assistant, including with the Buffalo Bills, where he coached in their four straight Super Bowl defeats.[3]
