CHUM-FM is a Canadian radio station licensed to Toronto, Ontario and operated by CTVglobemedia. It broadcasts at 104.5 MHz with a hot adult contemporary format, which evolved out of an album-oriented rock format in the 1980s.
Particularly in the 2000s, CHUM-FM's playlist has been noticeably more open to periodic, carefully-selected urban contemporary crossover songs, including rhythm and blues, reggae, and hip hop music than most United States hot adult contemporary stations. On Friday and Saturday nights, CHUM-FM plays a mix of top 40 and dance music that you don't normally hear during the day. Even CHUM-FM had a simulcast of American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest in 2004. Britpop and Europop influences are also subtly more pronounced. The closest local competition musically within the format comes from Mix FM, a hot adult contemporary station which generally leans towards slightly more and slightly harder rock music than CHUM-FM.
CHUM-FM is consistently one of Toronto's most popular stations in the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement radio ratings, and is currently the #1 FM radio station in its market. Roger Ashby, Rick Hodge and Marilyn Denis, longtime morning hosts as Roger, Rick and Marilyn, are among the best-known broadcasters in Toronto. The Roger, Rick and Marilyn morning show is produced by Tom Jokic.
According to his biography Private Parts, infamous shock jock Howard Stern was offered a job at CHUM-FM in the late 1970s while he was working at WWWW-FM. According to a February 2006 broadcast of his Sirius Satellite Radio show, he turned the job down because he would have been paid in Canadian dollars.
In 1978, CHUM-FM created a Top 30 Album Chart to complement sister station CHUM-AM's Singles Chart. Today, CHUM-FM's weekly countdown is hosted by Richie Favalaro. A television version of the countdown was on Citytv, (the show was made up of music videos for most of the songs in the countdown) but on January 2008, Rogers Communications took over Citytv, so the countdown was taken off the air.
In early 2007, CHUM-FM went national with an interactive evening show, The Sound Lounge, hosted by Chris Biggs. The show was originally hosted by Cory Kimm. Chris Biggs became the new host as of September 11, 2007. The Sound Lounge debuted on February 5, 2007 and airs in Halifax, Toronto, Brockville, Peterborough, Kingston, Winnipeg, Calgary and Victoria. The show hands over control of the content to the user's hands by an all listener chosen playlist, listener generated remixes and mash ups, and the opportunity to interact with listeners coast to coast via email, SMS, and voice. The Sound Lounge is produced by Jeremy Hutchinson and Danielle Legault.
At the 25th Anniversary Canadian Music Industry Awards, held March 8, 2007, CHUM-FM was honoured as Station of the Year, Program Director of the year for CHUM-FM PD Rob Farina, and air talent of the year for Roger, Rick & Marilyn. Former CHUM President Jim Waters was inducted into the Music Industry Hall Of Fame that same evening.
David Corey, ex-APD at KISS Boston took over as Program Director of CHUM FM in 2007. On June 22, 2007, CTVglobemedia purchased CHUM-FM and most of the other assets of CHUM Limited following approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, while the Citytv stations were sold to Rogers Communications.
CHUM-FM continues to be the most listened to and most influential radio station in Canada with over 1,166,000 weekly listeners according to the BBM data released on December 3, 2007.
