[edit] Chthonians reference

Chthonians are also the name of the Ancient Greek Gods of the Underworld 216.39.200.70 5 September 2005

Someone likes inserting this info here, but isn't this sufficiently covered in the chthon disambig that is referenced at the top of this article? The statement is also slightly inaccurate; it's not a name as in a class/club/family of gods, but rather a broad adjective used to describe deities associated not just with the underworld but also with nature and fertility. The word itself refers to the earth in the sense of subsoil. Can we remove these statements from this article? Canonblack 14:14, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
  • I took your word for it and removed the sentence from the article. Since no references are cited, it's probably a mistake. In fact, that hatnote doesn't belong in the article either, since there's nothing to disambiguate. It's probably a leftover from a page move. Think I'll remove that, too.

Actually, you could have removed it yourself, but I suppose you were looking for a second opinion. However, keep in mind: "If thine edit offend thee, pluck it out!" ;^)

Certainly, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing the point of the statement being here in the first place. Although we're encouraged to "act on our own recognizance", I'd rather leave anything I'm not sure about and just draw attention to it. Canonblack 15:59, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
  • I usually remove anything that looks questionable to the talk page (such as unreferenced information that looks like original research). That way, someone might be able to substantiate it (hopefully with a verifiable reference) or at least rewrite it to conform to NOR. Another option would be to mark dubious material with the {{fact}} template. That way, it would alert readers that the claim being made is unreferenced. (BTW, I figured you already knew about the be bold prime directive; I just couldn't resist posting a silly pun.)

[edit] "Granglia" or "ganglia"?

In the Lumley citation we have the word "granglia" which links to the article on basal ganglia. Is this a typo/misspelling, or did Lumley actually spell it this way? Canonblack 23:02, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm assuming that it was a typo, so I changed it. If it was not, then this discussion should at least draw attention to it.

[edit] Removed from article

I removed the following from the article:

Chthonian is also used by the African-American author Ralph Ellison in his novel Invisible Man. Ellison's protagonist is recruited by a communist style organization called "The Brotherhood" who have a headquarters in an upper-class New York City apartment building called the Chthonian.

I don't think that every vague reference to the term "Chthonian" belongs in this article. The reference should have at least some connection to the Cthulhu Mythos.
