I have changed my username on all Wiki sites from Singkong to Singkong2005. This is to make it possible to distinguish between singkong (the Indonesian word for cassava), and my username, when searching in Wikipedia. Singkong2005 13:35, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Wilayah doesn't have any official meaning in Indonesian. It just means "area" or "territory". A province is called provinsi (or sometimes propinsi) in Indonesian. Meursault2004 8 July 2005 14:43 (UTC)

Hi singkong, i am Tobias, we met on Wilayah article. Your language learning program looks ambitious or even crazy. If you meet someone in Germany the first words might be "Guten Tag" ([wish you a] Good day). It would be used to say hello , no good bye. I am very impressed, arabic, hindi, mandarin .... I don't understand why the Singapore/Batam bit is is the article... you have placed it back. Help me understand it's importance to the understanding of sex tourism. If you want it in there, please include a few other countries without such laws.... otherwise, it just sorta sticks out.

Hello "me",
1. I would have asked the person who removed the Singapore/Batam bit what their reasons were, but they were anonymous. They gave no reasons in their "Edit Summary". Also, the same user who removed it is apparently the same person who makes a habit of vandalizing Wikipedia articles (judging by other edits made from that IP address). So I wasn't inclined to take them seriously.
2. Being incomplete is better than not being there. Other Wikipedians can add other examples that they know of, and/or I will add more information as I'm able to. "It just sorta sticks out" is a reason for editing something, but not for removing it. --Singkong2005 00:56, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] water-borne diseases

I'm adding the category to all the parasites I can think of. The only real judgment call was schistosomiasis/schistosoma/schistosomatidae, where people are infected from being in water rather than from drinking it. I don't know if that counts. Thanks for your "wet blanket" note. I didn't add the image of Alfred E. Neuman; it was part of another user's comment on my talk page. In general, my attitude toward my talk page is very laissez-faire. I don't remove comments just because they're ill-informed or uncivil or whatever. Copyvio, though, is a necessary exception. I actually live in the ACT these days (formerly a Victorian), but I've been finding NSW's political history a little bit more interesting, which has inspired me to do a bit more work there. I personally am not an expert on page formatting. The person to talk to would be User:Cool Cat. He's the one who came up with the general format for my page in the first page. However, I also suggest looking at Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page as it contains a lot of general hints towards formatting. You move the article on the Fairmount Water Works into Category:Water management authorities, the problem is, based upon the Water works themselve and the other articles in the category, it not management authority, the authority was the City of Philadelphia Water Department (PWD). The works were, as they are no longer used in the fuction, as a kinda distrubution system, but i could not find a category that would best to place it in. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 07:48, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Fair play. I was thinking about putting it under the treatment category, but i didnt really think it fit their either. [edit] Appropriate technology - merge, category.

Thanks Singkong for the personal note on the merge proposal. My personal concern comes from issues noted in Wikipedia:Disambiguation about using the most common term. I also think that "appropriate techology" is the more common phrase, so if a merge takes place it should be toward that rather than the longer term. If the two articles were combined at appropriate technology I wouldn't have a concern, and I think that comparing the two within the same article (with strong links to Schumacher's original definition) would make for a better, single article. Until an article gets to around a dozen subheadings or 20K or so I don't feel much is gained by splitting it into pieces.
For a good example of how two almost-warring sides can get along one might check out the integration of the term journal in the diary article. For an example of how splitting an article too quickly can lead to problems check out the teeny article at blood sport and the inappropriately-named article blood sport (hunting) which isn't about hunting at all. I would hate for something like that to happen under the longer name.
I think the idea of a category is terrific, though. Thanks for asking. I would strongly support a merge FROM appropriate technology for developing countries TO appropriate technology, but think the shorter phrase is stronger and more common. - Rorybowman 05:02, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Cool Cat - I'm looking to learn from for your table mastery again... I'm having trouble with userboxes on my userpage this time, making them all stick to the right. See here. I want the Wikiproject boxes and the text to fill in on the left - don't know why it isn't working. Suggestions or edits appreciated. I'm not sure why the right hand box has a large blank left border though. Its width is specified to be 240px, and the boxes inside it specify width: 242px; in their templates, but it won't go narrower.

Thanks for letting me know re: the size of the signature. I had just copied it from someone else and did not see a difference on my screen. In fact, I still do not see a difference so please let me know if it is normal size now. I used 'drdan' as a signature since I first signed up on Wiki. A couple of weeks ago I was mixed up with a vandal/troll and decided to change my signature to a homonym of my username rxnd / erikssond. I will be using that one from now on. To my understanding, this is not considered sock puppeteering and should be OK. Thanks for the Wikia-link. I will have a look at it, but I will not have much time at all over the next two months. [edit] Arsenic contamination of groundwater

As the article is focused on the hazard of natural arsenic contamination I put it in Environmental threats/Pollution/Water pollution (even though it isn't directly man-made). If the article would focus on the situation in Bangladesh it would be categorised under Environmental disasters. Maybe it should be split into two articles, one on the geological phenomena and one on the Bangladesh event? Oops. I stuck the article in Category:Environmental disasters before reading this. I still think it fits in that category, but I also agree with Erikssond's plan for how this topic should develop. I wanted to discuss a little more about DVDs as compared to the internet possibilities. It is best explained below.

Using Portable DVD Players to Educate People

Eldis OnDisc: Eldis is at the forefront of development information technology. People in the south do not have the internet access that the north does. We have decided to provide CDs which will enable the distribution to a wider audience than we currently reach. Eldis conducted a feasibility study to assess the potential impact of providing CDs. We discovered an over-whelming need for them and they will make our information available to a much wider audience.

Jan 06 Ken, this is something you have had in mind for some time, use portable DVD players and DVDs to teach the world. Seems these people have spent a lot of time and money perfecting it and it is working, even beyond their dreams. This is just beyond belief. They are training people at a rapid rate. It is like attending Harvard or Oxford in the middle of the Amazon. You simply bring Harvard or Oxford to the student on a DVD. They have solar powered DVDs for areas without electricity. Thank God for technology!! The whole school fits in a small briefcase. Ben

3 Feb 06. Ken, This morning I talked with Brick Cliff, the one with the DVD training. The exciting thing is that one man can, in theory, have 7 schools, one in a different town everyday. They have one, two, or more men, say in Mexico, that are running several training schools, some with 20 students each. The trainer goes from city to city so the students attend class once per week. The good part is there is little expense, no people to house, no books to buy, all the printed material is copied at the source. Ken, this is something that is working; it is not theory and they are training thousands of people all over the world. Brick travels to different countries to oversee the training. Ben

Mar 06: A letter arrived from Ghana stating that he found my address on the internet offering DVDs and would I please send him some. He enclosed a British pound coin [$2]. I mailed him 3 DVDs. Just think, here is a man out in the bush of Africa who got my address. This proves that there is no limit to the use of the internet and DVDs.

Portable DVD Players There is no country on earth where these cannot be used to teach people. In the USA, a player without a screen [plugs into a TV] cost $30. They are available with 7” to 10” screens for US$80 to $150. They play NSTC and PAL. They operate on 220, 120 & 12 v. They have cables to connect to a TV and a 12 v. battery.

I have lived in two developing countries and I have taught in 16 more. Go to any one of those countries and it is only a very small percentage of the people who have a computer. There are Cybercafes in most towns but only a small percentage of the people have the money to use them. Nigeria: 75,000,000 Nigerians live in poverty & have no access to computers and the internet. India: 250,000,000 cannot afford them or the cybercafe. They can be taught with portable DVD players and DVDs. Many can not read but they can see and hear the study. Imagine what would happen if all organizations had players and DVDs. Not only could they teach others but they could learn more and teach people to read or garden/farm or whatever. They could teach thousands of people. Those millions could access knowledge on a DVD. To do that same thing with books, in just one country, would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of dollars to ship them. I borrowed a player and watched a DVD. I could have been in the jungles of Latin America or in the bush of Africa just as well as in my home.

Very good. I'd like to cut out large chunks that seem irrelevant and archive them (at Wikipedia:WikiProject:Urban studies and planning/Archive1). Does that seem okay? My idea of how to lay out a WikiProject can be seen at Wikipedia:WikiProject International development - I was trying to do something a little different, to get people in and make it easy for them to find a way to contribute. Thank you for adding the http://www.appropedia.org site to Appropriate technology. This site does intend to differentiate in function from wikipedia in a few ways, encouraging, in addition to encyclopedic entries:

  • original research
  • personal/organizational pages for collaboration
  • project writeups
  • how-to's
  • Common working pages for relevant grants, events, calls for assistance, offerings of assistance, etc.

The layers of appropedia are categories and subcategories functioning as textbook style writeups, with articles, functioning as project/how-to submissions, underneath them. Users can, for instance:

  1. Look up greywater
  2. Read about greywater concepts
  3. View case-studies, how-to's and common errors to avoid for various greywater projects
  4. Edit and add their own greywater experiences, projects, how-to's and common errors to avoid

or skip to any of these steps.

Other layers (hopefully namespaces) are personal/organizational pages, used for networking, and common working pages as described in the bulleted list above.

Please check out the new projects that have been added this week. And more importantly please consider contributing some of your amazing expertise and energy. I understand your opinion on duplicating wikipedia's function, and I hope that you find appropedia to be a value-added and different wiki. Finally I would love to hear about any of your opinions on the nascent appropedia site.

So you bit the bullet! I had been hesitant about making the change myself in view of the fact that it seems to be a rather controversial topic. Still a lot of cleaning up to do; the article can probably be cut in half. I actually think the whole thing is a dud, and that the investors may have done the right thing by dragging their feet before putting money into it; see the discussion under Talk:Energy Tower.
It may be more interesting to extend the article on the Solar chimney (new style). As you noticed, I did quite a bit of surfing on the topic, and it turns out that there is a lot of interesting stuff out there. JdH 09:05, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, since the 24 June I have rewritten Solar chimney, and did a an extensive editing job on Solar Tower, and renamed that article to Solar updraft tower. But look: I haven't finished cleaning up and there pops up another one, please have a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Floating Solar Chimney Technology. Good work on categorisation. I was wondering about the capitalisation of Category:Without Borders Organisations - I think it should be Category:Without Borders organisations (cap B as it's part of the title of the organisations, but small o). I wanted to check with you as it's not a simple move - it seems the only way is to create a separate cat, and edit each article.
After that's sorted we can add other organisations - this link can help find some.
No probs. I did it in a hurry. A agree it needs changing. I realised this mistake too, but moving a category is harder than moving an article. Perhaps just flag the original for speedy deletion and create the correctly name category afresh. Cheers! — Donama 01:59, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Singkong2005! I am so very happy that you decided to join the WP:CBTF! I've been very lonely there and it's extremely encouraging that a man with your interests and background has decided to join the effort. I've been pouring over the things you've linked to on your user page and I see that we share a lot of common ground. I'm a strong advocate of community building at the worldwide level and intersted in things like world peace, green development, ecovillages, sustainability, technology transfer, appropriate technology, community studies and many many more topics, that I think we have in common. The whole focus of the Wikipedia community development strategy is to identify wikipedians that are keenly interested in the processes and procedures connected with concepts like consensus decision-making, conflict resolution and Wikipedia:User categorization. The idea is to define Wikipedia as both a community of interest and a community of practice as well as a learning community. I've needed "another head" in this thing with me for a long time. I've had extensive conversations with Sj, Cormaggio and a tiny handful of others who want to analyse m:The Wikipedia Community and identify structures and functions that are conducive to community building within this way of life.

Another role, in addition to the primary one of managing and improving wikipedia content about community, is to create an pervasive "project space" here in the article space, here in the Project namespace, at Meta, and the new "incubator" at incubator.wikimedia.org for collecting and refining "original" articles that examine the community aspects down here in the wikipedia space, meta, . I have launched a program:

The idea is to invoke the spirit of community all over the world during these trying times. You strike me as one who could get excited about such. Follow that series, if you have time and let me know what you think.

Couple of other questions:

  • Could you also enroll yourself on the participants list?
  • Do you use IRC? If so, I can meet you at #wikiproject and we can work in realtime.

I think SS as an abbreviation may be misleading as settleable solids are also an important factor in waste water treatment. [edit] Note to self re Solar Tower

I was going to add this to Talk:Solar Tower, but I want to get it straight in my own head first.

The terms that are commonly used seem rather ambiguous, so we may have to go for less common terms, if necessary. But if it's possible to resolve ambiguity with a term in brackets, that's an option, but I'm not sure which is better. (Updraft) & (downdraft) are good suggestions. Other ideas for clarifying some of the many solar-related articles include adding (thermal solar power) and/or (power generation) to the names.
I would still like to move the current Solar tower to Solar tower (astronomy, as that would be much clearer and avoid wrong linking when someone writes about the solar power style of tower. (Also note that googling "solar tower" gives more hits for the updraft style structure than anything else.) Any objections to this rename? Jdh, you don't seem keen, so I'll wait for your comment.
Sorry if I'm not being very clear... the whole terminology thing is a bit of a mess.

From what I saw of FlexMe's edits, he did seem to be making genuine contributions, but also removing things that shouldn't have been removed. I'd suggest replacing them, with an appropriate edit comment. If it's removed again without explanation or attempt at compromise, it's time for a polite note on the talk page, or their user talk page... Remember to assume good faith - always give an editor an extra chance to do the right thing. Quite often we get a pleasant surprise, in my experience.

SingKong ... this issue of quoting sources giving reliablilty of information ... it seems sensible at first ... yet it is wildly out of control ... check out the comment on the updraft page where it is said to be an expensive way to produce windpower (it might be expensive , but this is NOT the way to show it) ... this is simply a website quoting the media who quote someone's offhand comment - possibly out of context ... this is not reliable! The user Essene, (talk), a.k.a. H. Alfred Goolsbee,[1] has posted un-civil messages in this section (archived here), making accusations of defamation (regarding something written by another user) and threatening legal action. In spite of my prompt responses on his talk page, and my offers of cooperation in spite of his rudeness, he has even posted these legal threats on my blog, which I consider harrassment. He has, however, failed to respond to requests to clarify what he regards as defamation.

While I do not believe the threats had any basis, I have made very slight changes to JdH's post to remove any doubt. I have simply made it clear that the comments about Proton44 (a sockpuppet of Essene, or vice-versa?[2]) are simply opinion, which is legally protected as free speech. Readers are welcome to draw their own conclusions.

If Essene had approached this in a more civil manner, in the Wikipedian spirit, he most likely would have achieved a much more favorable outcome.

  1. ^ Essene identifies himself as H. Alfred Goolsbee, and the email address for Goolsbee at this website is the same as that given in his legal threats.
  2. ^ Proton44's contributions and Essene's contributions reflect similar interests, so I'm guessing they're sockpuppets - not that that's forbidden, but it's good to be clear.

Well, you are right: my trigger level was/is set quite low. The reason for that is that "Solar updraft tower" has a very torturous history; you may want to check out previous discussions about that, see Question about this article and Self-promotion?. Basically, the first version of this article was written by Proton44, who identified himself as H. Alfred Goolsbee. Goolsbee is very much involved in promoting the Solar Tower®, and he actually owns that trademark. For his role in all of this you may want to check out this and this press release. My opinion of what Goolsbee was trying to do is that he was (ab)using Wikipedia for promoting his stuff; if that's what he was doing, it is considered spam and it against Wikipedia policy. So when Flexme started to remove material that was even remotely critical of the Solar Tower® I lost my temper. My apologies for that. my name is Meutia Chaerani from Singapore. I volunteered helped out in the Urbepedia at Urbepedia. It is a newly set up wiki focusing on Urban issues, and currently needing more contributors. I'd like to invite your participation in the wiki. Also need to brainstorm more on how the Urbepedia can be different yet complementing to information already existing in Wikipedia.

At this stage, i'm thinking that Urbepedia would be more detailed and more technical, and also acts as repository of best urban practices from around the world, as well as repository of contact information of urban experts. Whereas wikipedia is aimed for a broader audience, the article should be easy to grasp to different kind of people, from kids to adults. Not sure, but I'm inclined to add the category tag to any article on a substance or indicator that discusses its use as an indicator. I've added it to Nitrate for this reason (see Nitrate#Effects on aquatic life). The other articles don't mention theor use as indicators, so perhaps they should be expanded first. Water quality mentions various indicators, so I added the tag to that article too.

There are certain indicators which are very standard (esp. fecal coliforms) but many more which potentially could be used. I haven't done a lot of study on this, so I'm not sure where we draw the line. I suppose we just include anything that is notable as an indicator. Arsenic would qualify in Bangladesh, but I'm not sure which article is most suitable - Arsenic contamination of groundwater seems more relevant than Arsenic or Arsenic poisoning, but isn't about arsenic as a water quality indicator. --Singkong2005 talk 15:05, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Arsenic is an important factor in analysing water as are other heavy metals. It is quite expensive to test for individual heavy metals and require the use of OES (optical emission spectroscopy) or AES (atomic emission spectroscopy), or x-ray fluorescence. Usual proceedure is to use conductivity as a measure of ions in the water. There is also the relationship between acidity and increased heavy metal dilution in the case of acid mine tailings.--Alex 15:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Would this be a reliable way of ensuring that toxic metals are at or below a safe level? Definitely not where there is a salinity issue, but it seems from the following quotes that arsenic levels are much lower than salinity levels even in fresh water: The World Health Organization recommends a limit of 0.01 mg/L (i.e. 0.001%) of arsenic in drinking water (from Arsenic poisoning); and The actual amount of salt in fresh water is, by definition, less than 0.05%. (from Salinity).
I realize that conductivity is not directly proportional to salinity in g/L or percentage, but I'm assuming that there is a reasonably strong relationship, and this would imply that conductivity is not very helpful as an indicator of danger from arsenic or other metals.

It starts to get technical here. Different substances are toxic in different levels. The mechanisms by which heavy metals are toxic are different to the mechanisms that make salinity toxic. Heavy metals have adverse effects on cells and can bioaccumulate. Cadmium and mercury are some of the more toxic heavy metals. Aluminium is debatably less toxic. Salt concentrations have effects on osmosis in cells - relating to diffusion of water across a membrane. The international standards for toxicity are Dutch and give a good outline. I think they are called the Dutch Standard or something similar.
Conductivity will relate to the charge on ions in the waterway, and I am not an expert on this subject so I am probably not best placed to write an article on this. --Alex 15:57, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Over the past couple of months I've been spending much more time than I should developing the Energy portal, and intend asking for a portal peer review within the next day or so.

The portal provides a showcase for energy-related articles on Wikipedia. One of the most prominent ways is via a the selected article that is currently changed every 6 weeks or so. I do most of my browsing in Mozilla Firefox. I thought you might like to know that the ads to which you provide links on the 2CV page display only your comments, and not the graphics, when viewed in Firefox. When I kick-started the dreaded IE7 and had a look, they were fine. I'm not techie enough (well, hardly at all!) to suggest what might be the problem. [edit] Pre-Meiji Period: Use of Japanese era name in identifying disastrous events

Would you consider making a contribution to an exchange of views at either of the following:

As you know, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disaster management came up with entirely reasonable guidelines for naming articles about earthquakes, fires, typhoons, etc. However, the <<year>><<place> <<event>> format leaves no opportunity for conventional nengō which have been used in Japan since the eighth century (701-1945) -- as in "the Great Fire of Meireki" (1657) or for "the Hōei eruption of Mount Fuji" (1707).

In a purely intellectual sense, I do look forward to discovering how this exchange of views will develop; but I also have an ulterior motive. I hope to learn something about how better to argue in favor of a non-standard exception to conventional, consensus-driven, and ordinarily helpful wiki-standards such as this one. In my view, there does need to be some modest variation in the conventional paradigms for historical terms which have evolved in non-Western cultures -- no less in Wikipedia than elsewhere. I'm persuaded that, at least in the context of Japanese history before the reign of Emperor Meiji (1868-1912), some non-standard variations seem essential; but I'm not sure how best to present my reasoning to those who don't already agree with me. I know these first steps are inevitably awkward; but there you have it.

The newly-created 1703 Genroku earthquake article pushed just the right buttons for me. Obviously, these are questions that I'd been pondering for some time; and this became a convenient opportunity to move forward in a process of building a new kind of evolving consensus. --Ooperhoofd (talk) 18:26, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
