[edit] re- Prabir Ghosh (indian rationalist) article
--Pinaki ghosh 17:10, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Hi Singkong, I am Prabir's son, Pinaki. Some of the material has been borrowed from his srai.org site, which my father Prabir Ghosh owns. What kind of permission do u need in this case?
- I must contact the website using this type of email.
- Note also, from the same page:
- Text in Wikipedia articles must be licensed under the terms of the Gnu Free Documentation License. When asking for permission, you should explain that this means that
- The text or image may be freely redistributed and used.
- It may be freely modified, and modified versions may also be freely redistributed and used.
- Any redistribution must include the full text of the GFDL itself.
- In all cases, the GFDL requires proper attribution of the author(s).
- The GFDL allows commercial re-uses provided such re-use is also under the GFDL.
- You may also choose to explain that the author does not give up any of his or her rights: he or she is still free to publish the text elsewhere or to license the same text to other parties under any other license. You may also want to mention that the requirement to include the full text of the GFDL with any redistribution makes stand-alone commercial reuse of the item unlikely in practice.

[edit] Comment from Jeffalbert
Chris-
Greetings, and my apologies for taking months to respond. as you can see, i am a Wikineophyte - and amazingly, i did not see your message of May 1 until just now.
In any case, yes, i do intend to continue to update Appropriate Technology/Water Treatment, particularly to add more material on community-level treatment systems, health consequences of various interventions, etc.
Thanks for reaching out several months ago (and nice work with Appropedia!)

[edit] Response
Hello Chris, thanks for the note, sorry for the length of time getting back to you. I have been very busy recently and I haven't contributed much in the last couple of months to wikipedia. Will be glad to help in the future.--Alex Marshall (talk) 14:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Your warning to me about the vandalism tag
I am familiar with WP:AGF and used the term vandalism quite deliberately. To quote WP:Vandalism: "Continuing to add external links to non-notable or irrelevant sites (e.g. to advertise one's website) to pages after having been warned is vandalism." I have warned the user twice, although they have done added the link several times to various articles. Review User:Sreejiagriman contributions if this is unclear. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:28, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Your concerns about newbies and templates are valid, but I had previously given a non-template warning to this user here. I chose the vandalism template for the next warning because WP:Vandalism is where the relevant policy is found. I'm not sure how much more it makes sense to do, given that they seem to have ignored all warnings thus far. Oh well. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 16:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Getting back to you
Hi Chris. Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I'd love to connect up sometime but this is probably not the best time (at a small bank training institute in Guwahati right now; connections are not good). I believe you have an interest in water user groups; I'm working on a research project that will look at the problem of developing robust water management institutions in oral communities. I'm in northern India for the next while if you happen to up here! Best.Brett epic (talk) 14:25, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Ausgerechnet Bananen!
Hi, I have resolved the Madagascar issue at Talk:Banana. Turns out that French and a dash of old-school Spanish was also needed... Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 05:55, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hippo Water Roller Page Work
Chris -
Thanks for the "welcome" earlier this month.
I've done some work on the Hippo Water Roller Page.
- Restructuring with headings
- Addition of African Water Supply content
- Notes and References
- Also see the discussion page for my status with a photo search.
I'd like to your input in refining my restructuring / references to obtain a uniform stub.
Also any thoughts on the addition of African Water Supply content. By no means is it comprehensive, I wanted to get some information down to start.
Roccasecca (talk) 01:21, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- It looks like a good stub now. My only suggestions are:
-
- Be aware that citations are needed in Wikipedia. If you can't find the citations for what you want to write but think they probably exist (in acceptable sources), you can use the {{fact}} tag. If it's good content but not likely to have references, consider putting it at Appropedia instead.
- Link the African water supply section to a relevant page - Water crisis or something more specific.
- "African water supply" is an example of a topic that could be explored more freely at Appropedia - though if there are sources, there's no fundamental reason not to have pages on both Wikipedia and Appropedia on the same topic, with different kinds of content.
- Minor point: on Wikipedia, the style is "African water supply" rather than "African Water Supply".
- Keep up the good work! --
[edit] G'day
G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).
If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do head over here and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Your Thoughts
Chris - Taking a step back and looking at what the Wikipedia community at large wants from its contributors, how do you think the Hippo water roller stub can be expanded with the ultimate goal of "featured article" in mind? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roccasecca (talk • contribs) 02:45, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yikes - tough one.
- I see my role as more one of throwing useful stuff together, as well as encouraging others to contribute. I then hope that someone will tidy it. But am not too fussed if it stays messy, as long as it's functional. Yes, I'm an engineer.
- My initial thought is that the Hippo water roller is just not a very big topic, and its ideal length may only be a few paragraphs. It's already a very useful page for anyone wanting information on it. For a more helpful response, perhaps ask at the :WikiProject League of Copyeditors or ask a WikiFairy. Also think whether you particularly want to focus on this, or if another International development stub would be benefit more from the work. All these are suggestions only
- Sorry I can't be more help. Don't hesitate to ask further. --Chriswaterguy talk 13:25, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

- Just had a closer look... you've been doing a lot of good work. 2 things to look at:
- the refs need to be a link, so <ref>[http://changemakers.net/foo Change Makers]</ref> rather than <ref>Change Makers</ref> - where http://changemakers.net/foo is the specific page that mentions the information you are referencing.
- look for directly relevant statistics. Rather than the population of Africa, look for something like the number of people (in the world, or Africa or wherever) who live more than x distance from their water source.
- Cheers, --Chriswaterguy talk 13:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Civility?
"I'm concerned that Wikipedia is losing its civility," you write. At the Edema page, you write: "It's 'oedema', not 'edema'. Stop being bloody imperialists." Think about it. Samuel Webster (talk) 09:43, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed that's not civil - but it also wasn't me. Someone merged an anon comment into mine. --Chriswaterguy talk 09:30, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
