Christopher Peter Andersen (born May 26, 1949) is an American journalist and the author of 28 books, including many best sellers. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Andersen joined the staff of Time Magazine as a contributing editor in 1969—the youngest in Time’s history. From l974 to l986 Andersen was senior editor of Time Incorporated’s People Magazine. He has also written for a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, Life, and Vanity Fair.
While his early nonfiction books ran the gamut from psychology (The Name Game) to true crime (The Serpent’s Tooth) to art collecting (The Best of Everything, with former Sotheby’s chairman John Marion) Andersen is best known for his controversial biographies. Between l996 and 2007, he published 11 New York Times bestselling biographies in a row, including four volumes on the Kennedy family (Jack and Jackie: Portrait of an American Marriage, Jackie After Jack, The Day John Died, and Sweet Caroline), three volumes on the Britain’s royal family (The Day Diana Died, Diana’s Boys, and After Diana), two on Bill and Hillary Clinton (Bill and Hillary: The Marriage and American Evita), one on George and Laura Bush (George and Laura: Portrait of an American Marriage), and a Barbra Streisand biography entitled Barbra: The Way She Is. Two of these -- The Day Diana Died (l998) and The Day John Died (2000) -- went to No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List. The Day John Died and an earlier Andersen best seller, 1991’s Madonna Unauthorized, were both made into highly rated made-for-television films. Seven of Andersen’s titles have also been selected for the Readers Digest Today’s Best Nonfiction Books of the Year series.
In the course of promoting his headline-making books, Andersen became a familiar media figure, appearing frequently on such programs as the Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, Larry King Live, the CBS Early Show, Dateline, Extra, The O’Reilly Factor, Inside Edition, and Hardball.
Married since 1972 to former international banker Valerie Hess, Andersen resides in Connecticut. They have two daughters—network TV news producer Katharine (b. 1980) and Kelly (l990).
