Christine Stewart

Christine Susan Stewart PC (born January 3, 1941) is a Canadian politician.
Stewart, a nurse by training, served in the Canadian House of Commons as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Northumberland for twelve years. She was first elected in the 1988 election, defeating her closest rival by a margin of 27 votes.
Before entering politics, Stewart and her family lived in Honduras where she and her husband worked on development projects with the Horizons of Friendship Non-governmental organization which they helped found. She also founded a food bank in her community of Cobourg, Ontario, and was active in her church. She also served as a trustee on the Northumberland Separate School Board.
Following the Liberal victory in the 1993 election, Stewart was appointed Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa). In 1997, she was promoted to the Cabinet as Minister of the Environment. She was considered a weak minister, however, and was dropped in a 1999 cabinet shuffle.
She retired from politics and did not run for re-election in the 2000 election.
