Christianity in Albania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christianity in Albania was established throughout the country in 100 A.D. From the 1000 A.D. the Byzantine Empire carried out Church missions in the area. In relation to the increasing influence of Venice the Franciscans started to settle down in the area in 13th Century. From 15th Century to 19th Century, under the rule of the Ottoman Empire conquest, Christianity in Albania almost disappeared. There are currently three main Christian congregations: Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Evangelicals, around 35% of population are Christians[1].

The Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania (referred to as Orthodox) and the Roman Catholic Church are biggest Christian denominations. An estimated 20 to 25 % of the population belongs to communities that are traditionally Albanian Orthodox and 10 % to Catholic communities[2].
