Christian Matras was born at Viðareiði in 1900. He took a doctor’s degree in Old Norse in 1933 from the university of Copenhagen, and in 1952 he became a professor at the same university. In 1965 he returned to the Faroes to become head of the departement for Faroese language at university in Tórshavn. His great work analyses Faroese literature, language and culture, but also as a poet is he one of the most important in Faroese literature. He died in 1988.[1]
