The electorate is in the northern suburbs of Christchurch, New Zealand.

The electorate was created in 1881, to 1890; it was held from 1884 to 1890 by Sir Julius Vogel. It was then re-created in 1905 and abolished in 1946. Finally it was re-created in 1984 to replace the Papanui electorate, and was replaced in 1996 by the Waimakiriri electorate for MMP. It was held by three Premiers or Prime Ministers, Julius Vogel, Sidney Holland and Mike Moore.
