Chris Wheeler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chris Wheeler (Born August 9, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an announcer and commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball. Going by the nickname "Wheels", Wheeler has been broadcasting for the Phillies on TV and radio since 1977. Wheeler graduated from Penn State University in 1967 with a BA degree in journalism and broadcasting. In 1971, he entered the Phillies organization as Assistant Director of Publicity and Public Relations. He was added to the broadcast team in 1977.

Chris has often had a turbulent relationship with Philadelphia announcing icon Harry Kalas. News of this rivalry was posted in the local sports media during Harry Kalas' contract negotiations where he asked that he not be forced to work with Wheeler. The Phillies organization has reacted to these issues by initially limiting their on air time together, though under the current broadcast pairings they work six innings together on television with Gary Matthews.[citation needed]
