Chris Burney ( a.k.a Christopher van Malmsteen, born May 25, 1969 in Wichita County, Texas) is the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the pop punk band Bowling for Soup. He graduated from Midwestern State University, in 1993.

Christopher van Malmsteen was born in Wichita Falls, Tx. He graduated in 1993 in Physical Education from the Midwestern State University. In 1994, together with Jaret Reddick, Erik Chandler and Lance Morril, he formed the pop punk band, Bowling for Soup. He plays a Les Paul guitar. He also has a two year old French bulldog named Sherman Mabobber Burney. Chris is quite proud of his extensive DVD collection, and is a guns and ammo enthusiast, as well as golfing. Some of Burney's favorite programs include Rescue Me, Lost, the Shield, HBO's Band of Brothers, Robot Chicken, Family Guy, and King of the Hill.When Chris is not on the road, he enjoys a rousing game of PGA Tour Golf, coupled with double Jack Daniels and Diet Coke, tall. Chris has extensive tattoo work done, most notably a tattoo sleeve on his left arm which features various cereal mascots (Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam, etc). The text "cereal killer" appears on the arm. Chris is missing a front tooth and has a replacement prosthetic in its place. On August 9th 2007 the band decided to name the fake tooth "Byron" during a Rye, NY concert.

His nickname van Malmsteen comes from the swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen. He was also briefly involved in The Persecuted in the early 1990s while he was in Wichita Falls, Texas.
