To me "the former" carries the implication that he is the only previous incumbent of the role, or at least the immediate predecessor of the current jobholder, whereas "a former" makes it clearer that many people have done the job. But I'm not hugely bothered either way. David Underdown 08:25, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
