Chowk is a progressive website with a focus on India and Pakistan.[1] Its goal is to provoke readers go beyond sound bites and uncover truth, however uncomfortable.
Chowk was launched in 1997 on the 50th Independence anniversary of India and Pakistan with the mission to promote and nurture independent voices that question, dissect and examine the social, political, religious and cultural moorings of that region.[2]
Chowk is updated daily with new original articles, opinions, commentary on current affairs. In addition Chowk also publishes reviews, short stories, and poetry by new writers of South Asian origin.[3]
Chowk also features services like blogs, gallery and discussion forums for its community where vibrant desi voices express their opinions, musings and experiences.[4]
Founding team included Safwan Shah, Umair Khan, Ginni Dhindsa and Radhika Nagpal.

Chowk content is regularly republished by news sites and discussion groups. Some of the most widely copied articles have included Bilal Musharraf’s “He had no choice”[5] after the 1999 political coup of Pakistan carried out by his father General Pervez Musharraf, Ali Minai’s “A Time for Renewal” [6] examining Islam post September 11.

All most all of Chowk content is contributed by its members. Chowk publishes commentary, analysis and reviews alongside fiction and poetry. The content is selected on its merit of thought provoking ideas rather than any ideology.[7]
