[edit] Plot
This series takes place on Academia Island, which is both a location and a school for scientists. One day, Academia's three finest students, Tsukigata, Senda, and Omura felt their talents were being wasted at Academia and left. They accepted a position in the evil organization Volt. On the night of their departure, their former classmates Yuusuke Amamiya, Jou Oohara, Megumi Misaki, Takuji Yano, and Mari Aikawa saw them leaving. Tsukigata drew a gun on the five, killing Takuji and Mari.
Prior to the pair's deaths, Takuji and Mari were working alongside Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi in creating a suit strong enough for space exploration. They had made substantial progress on the night that they were murdered. One of the professors at the school, Professor Hoshi, pitched in to help them complete their original ambitions. Hoshi was also worried that Volt would begin attacking people, and thus helped out to prepare against a future assault.
Two years later, Academia launched a shuttle for space exploration. However, a mysterious ship appears and downs the shuttle; Yuusuke, Jou and Megumi are among the few survivors. They discover that Tsukigata, Senda, and Omura were responsible for the destruction of the shuttle. As a result, Yuusuke, Jou, and Megumi took up the powers of the original project, becoming Liveman to battle against their former classmates and Volt.
Later in the series, they are joined by Tetsuya and Junichi, younger brothers of the late Takuji and Mari.
[edit] Characters
[edit] Main characters
[edit] Members
- Yuusuke Amamiya (天宮勇介 Amamiya Yūsuke?)/Red Falcon (レッドファルコン Reddo Farukon?) - A poor student at Academia, but a strong leader and quick thinking under pressure. He is brave and a hardworker. Initially starts as hot-headed and sarcastic, but grows into the role of dependable leader as the series progresses. He likes rock music and working out. He was once in love with Rui Senda, but she did not love him. He was good friends with Kenji during their first year or so at Academia until things went sour between them once Kenji started down a dark path. In the 2001 Sentai direct-to-DVD crossover film Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger versus Super Sentai, he briefly dueled Gaku Washio (Gao Yellow) in a swordfight and then lectured Gaku on the many sword-wielding warriors of the Super Sentai franchise, and introduced the Gaorangers to all the 23 other red rangers.
- Jou Oohara (大原丈 Ōhara Jō?)/Yellow Lion (イエローライオン Ierō Raion?) - He is at the bottom of the class at Academia. He is a sportsman and skateboarder. He is short tempered and ready to dive into danger, Jou has the strength to back up his actions. He was once a good friend with Gou and heartbroken when their friendship dissolved once the weak-willed Gou fell into a bad crowd.
- Megumi Misaki (岬めぐみ Misaki Megumi?)/Blue Dolphin (ブルードルフィン Burū Dorufin?) - A top class student at Academia who got involved with Yuusuke and Jou for some reason and did powered suit research with them and the late Takuji Yano and Mari Aikawa. She is good at swimming and bicycling. She was taught archery by her father. She often criticizes Yuusuke's strategies. A caring figure, feeling even for her enemies. She is very skilled and has fired an arrow from the Dolphin Arrow while riding the Moto Dolphin.
- Weapons: Dolphin Arrow (ドルフィンアロー Dorufin Arō?)
- Age: 19 years old
- Tetsuya Yano (矢野鉄也 Yano Tetsuya?)/Black Bison (ブラックバイソン Burakku Baison?) - The younger brother of Takuji and elder brother of Takeshi. He is good at boxing. He nearly destroyed the Gran Tortoise after being taken over by Volt. He is generally a good-hearted person, but has a temper and hatred, mostly fueled by his desire for revenge on Kemp for the murder of his older brother.
- Weapon: Bison Rod (バイソンロッド Baison Roddo?)
- Age: 19 years old
- Jun'ichi Aikawa (相川純一 Aikawa Jun'ichi?)/Green Sai (グリーンサイ Gurīn Sai?, Green Rhino) - The younger brother of Mari and a rugby player. He calls Tetsuya "Tetsu-chan", looking up to him as an older brother. The youngest member of the team, temporarily leaving high school in order to fight Volt. He was once impregnated and "gave birth" to a monster.
- Weapons: Sai Cutters (サイカッター Sai Kattā?, Rhino Cutters)
- Age: 17 years old (youngest member)
[edit] Gear
- Twin Brace (ツインブレス Tsuin Buresu?): Liveman's transforming device. The right wrist is the one with the animal icon. When transforming by themselves, they transform by saying their name (i.e "Red Falcon!" , "Yellow Lion!" etc.). Starting with episode 6, they shout "Liveman!".
[edit] Weapons
- Live Blaster (ライブラスター Raiburasutā?): It is the standard sidearm of the team. It can be used as a gun or be separated into a sword and shield. It can be brought out on its own from the Twin Brace without transforming.
- Bimotion Buster (バイモーションバスター Baimōshon Basutā?): It is the finishing cannon used throughout the series. It was summoned by all three, and later five, members.
- Triple Bazooka (トリプルバズーカ Toripuru Bazūka?): It was first used in episode 22, it is a weapon formed from the Falcon Saber, Dolphin Arrow, and Lion Bazooka. It is apparently faster to bring out and fire than the Bimotion Buster.
[edit] Team Attacks
- Spark Attack (スパークアタック Supāku Atakku?): It is the special attack where the five members turn into balls of light and strike the enemy.
[edit] Vehicles
- Moto Machines (モトマシン Motomashin?): It is the individual motorcycles for the original trio.
- Live Cougar (ライブクーガー Raibu Kūgā?): A four-wheeled drive for the entire team. It is also used by Colon and later by Black Bison and Green Sai.
- Machine Buffalo (マシンバッファロー Mashinbaffaroo?): A flying fortress that carries the component mecha of the Live Robo and the Live Boxer. It is launched from the tower that rises out of the undersea base, the Gran Tortoise (グラントータス Gurantootasu?).
[edit] Mecha
- Live Robo (ライブ ロボ Raibu Robo?): Liveman's original trio robo (first giant robo consisting of mechanical animals) formed when the command "Fusion! Live Dimension!" (合体! ライブディメンション! Gattai! Raibu Dimenshon!?) is given. Apparently, as seen in some episodes, the Live Robo can be launched into battle already formed. Its main weapon is the Super Beast Sword (超獣剣 Chōjūken?) that is used for destroying monsters with its finishing attacks like the Super Live Crash (スーパーライブクラッシュ Sūpā Raibu Kurasshu?) and the Strong Crashdown (ストロングクラッシュダウン Sutorongu Kurasshudaun?). Its other weapons are the Live Shield (ライブシールド Raibu Shīrudo?), Double Cannons (ダブルカノン Daburu Kanon?), and the Live Robo Beam (ライブ ロボ ビーム Raibu Robo Bīmu?).
- Jet Falcon (ジェットファルコン Jetto Farukon?): Red Falcon's jet. It forms the head, back, waist and thigh of the Live Robo. It is stored in the upper compartment of the Machine Buffalo. It has legs for touchdown. It appeared again in Gaoranger vs Super Sentai.
- Land Lion (ランドライオン Rando Raion?): Yellow Lion's mecha-lion. It forms the torso and arms of the Live Robo and the Live Shield also the Double Cannons. It is stored in the lower compartment of the Machine Buffalo behind the Aqua Dolphin.
- Aqua Dolphin (アクアドルフィン Akua Dorufin?): Blue Dolphin's submarine. It forms the legs of the Live Robo. It is stored in lower compartment of the Machine Buffalo in front of the Land Lion. It has wheels for land travel.
- Live Boxer (ライブ ボクサー Raibu Bokusā?): Liveman's second robot for Black Bison and Green Sai formed when the command "Fusion! Boxer Dimension!" (合体! ボクサーディメンション! Gattai! Bokusā Dimenshon!?) is given. It is called "Boxer" for boxing and kick-boxing attacks. It consists of the Bison Liner and the Sai Fire. Its special attack is the Piston Punch (ピストンパンチ Pisuton Panchi?), and its finishing attack to destroy monsters is the Miracle Big Blow (ミラクルビッグブロー Mirakuru Biggu Burō?).
- Bison Liner (バイソンライナー Baison Rainā?): A trailer piloted by Black Bison; Red Falcon and Yellow Lion co-pilot at times. It forms the head, torso, arms, and left foot of the Live Boxer, and the left shoulder, helmet, waist shield, and feet of the Super Live Robo.
- Sai Fire (サイファイヤー Sai Faiyā?, Rhino Fire): A missile truck piloted by Green Sai ; Blue Dolphin co-pilots at times. It forms the legs and right foot of the Live Boxer, and the forearms and right shoulder of the Super Live Robo.
- Super Live Robo (スーパーライブ ロボ Sūpā Raibu Robo?): The combination of the Live Robo and the Live Boxer into a powerful robo. The two robots combine when the command "Fusion! Super Live Dimension!" (合体! スーパーライブディメンション! Gattai! Sūpā Raibu Dimenshon!?) is given. Its ultimate finishing attack to destroy monsters is the Super Big Burst (スーパービッグバースト Sūpā Biggu Bāsuto?). It was first used to destroy the giant robot Giga Volt.
[edit] Allies
- Doctor Hoshi (星博士 Hoshi-hakase?): The principal of Academia, made the Gran Tortoise and gave the Liveman mecha the ability to combine before dying. He died helping a pregnant woman trapped in the rubble of Academia Island escape.
- Colon (コロン Koron?): A female robot built by Doctor Hoshi in charge of Gran Tortoise, assists the team. She frequently supports Liveman on foot, car, bike, and the Machine Buffalo (especially before Black Bison and Green Sai join) - despite being a rather slender robot, she occasionally jumps into battle as a fourth member. Once fell in love with a malfunctioning Jimmer, and later Yuusuke (who treated her coldly at the time until she saved him by taking a sword cut meant for him). She is able to swim, or otherwise move underwater, perhaps as part of being in charge of the Gran Tortoise. She has a habit of saying "Colon".
- Takuji Yano (矢野卓二 Yano Takuji?): An Academia student studying on the powering suits for space travel with Yuusuke, Jou, Megumi, and Mari. The older brother of Tetsuya and Takeshi. His prototype power suit featured a swallow. Yuusuke was his best friend. He was killed protecting his friends from Tsukigata's blasts. He promised his youngest brother Takeshi to build a dream car with him, his death resulting in the death of Takeshi's dream until he approached Yuusuke and Yuusuke agreed to help him build it (it eventually becoming the Live Cougar).
- Mari Aikawa (相川麻理 Aikawa Mari?): An Academia student studying on the powering suits for space travel with Yuusuke, Jou, Megumi, and Takuji. The older sister of Jun'ichi. Her suit featured a dog. She was also working on the plans for the Bison Liner and the Sai Fire before her death.
- Gou Omura (尾村豪 Omura Gō?): After quitting Volt, he becomes an ally for Liveman and discovers religion.
[edit] Villains
[edit] Armed Brain Army Volt
Believing most of humanity to be inferior, Armed Brain Army Volt (武装頭脳軍ボルト Busō Zunō Gun Boruto?) intends to create a new world ruled only by superior beings. Life has no value to them; only brains do. Great Professor Bias, the leader of Volt, believes in no one but himself and controls his trio of officers with the allure of evil science. He looks down upon the Earth and its inhabitants with contempt aboard the orbiting space station Brain Base (ヅノーベース Dzunōbēsu?). His officers use a triangular shuttle to journey between Earth and Brain Base. Volt's goal is to create a new population of only geniuses, wiping out those with "inferior minds".
- Great Professor Bias (大教授ビアス Daikyōju Biasu?): A super genius scientist of evil beliefs, well versed in all knowledge. Worshipped as a god by his officers. Bias' intellect prevents him from brutally punishing his officers or yelling out at them upon their failure; he believes they should recognize and learn from their shame. He is actually very old, his true aim is to educate his officers until one of them possess a I.Q of 1,000. Once that occurs, he steals their brains, which begin to emit a "Giga Brain Wave" that keeps him eternally youthful and intelligent. He turns himself into a child with Kemp's brain, but Kemp's spirit is able to rebel and cause Bias to revert to his true old self. He dies weak and confused aboard the exploding Brain Base with Gash.
- Doctor Kemp (ドクター・ケンプ Dokutā Kenpu?) (1-48): He was formerly known as Kenji Tsukigata (月形剣史 Tsukigata Kenji?), Yuusuke's former friend at Academia, turned rival once Kenji started to become egotistical and power hungry; is ashamed to have once been friends with a fool like Yuusuke. A top pupil of Bias who overestimates his own ability and is full of himself and vain, as reflected in when he assumes the form of Beauty Beast Kemp (美獣ケンプ Bijū Kenpu?). By episode 36, Kemp becames Fear Beast Kemp (恐獣ケンプ Kyōjū Kenpu?). He managed to obtain the IQ of 1,000, only to be robbed of his mind by Bias. As a result, Kemp's body becomes nothing more than the standard Brain Beast. Kemp's strong will returns enough to rob Bias of the powers he has obtained by using Kemp's brain in the finale.
- Doctor Mazenda (ドクター・マゼンダ Dokutā Mazenda?) (1-47) : She was formerly known as Rui Senda (仙田ルイ Senda Rui?), Megumi's rival at Academia. Cold, with a shrill laugh as her trademark. She reconstructs herself as a cyborg to reflect her coldness, removing any remaining heart, affection and ability to love (these elements are used to make a Brain Beast doppelganger, who falls in love with Jou). She enjoyed the idea of becoming more and more cyborg in order to preserve her beauty and always be powerful. She becomes Machine Mazenda (マシン・マゼンダ Mashin Mazenda?) (38-47) and Robo Mazenda (ロボマゼンダ Robomazenda?) (47 - to keep Bias from taking her brain). Gou causes her to begin to doubt Volt and Bias' true intentions. She dies after regaining some of her former humanity. Yuusuke was once in love with her during their college days.
- Doctor Obular (ドクター・オブラー Dokutā Oburā?) (1-21): He was formerly known as Gou Omura (尾村豪 Omura Gō?), Jou's one-time friend turned rival at Academia. A genius from childhood, who was always pushed to study and never allowed to play. Jou was always touched by the time he witnesses Gou attempt to save a drowning dog, despite the fact that Gou could not swim himself. He has an inferiority complex that led him to become the monster Obular (his reasoning being that Kemp and Mazenda merely changed their bodies, while he also improved his mind). He was eventually forced out of Volt once his powers begin to weaken and he ultimately ends up reverting to human and suffering amnesia, moving back home. Omura later returns, regaining his memory and letting the Liveman know about Bias' secret. He eventually takes up Christianity and makes it his mission to try and save his friends still with Volt before it is too late.
- Doctor Ashura (ドクター・アシュラ Dokutā Ashura?) (12-46): He was formerly known as Arashi Busujima (毒島嵐 Busujima Arashi?), a tough-as-nails underworld figure and gang leader (he can take on a Brain Beast and win), who became a super genius after receiving an evil education from Bias. He is the most physically brutal of all of the Volt officers because of his background as a streetwise tough guy. He despises those who think they are geniuses, therefore superior (especially those from the Science Academia). he gained the ability to 'Cyber Body Split' and generate the Shurer Three (シュラー三人衆 Shurā Sanjinshu?) (14-46). He is targeted by Bias when his Brain Beast at the moment, Hacker Zuno, hacked into Volt's mainframe and found suspicious articles regarding Bias' secret. Soon afterwards, Bias decides that Ashura is a hopeless candidate and strips him of his super-intelligence (reverting back to Arashi). After being befriended by the Liveman and Gou, he decides to strap himself with dynamite, and make a kamikaze run on a Brain Beast he -- or the Liveman -- were unable to defeat. He has a soft spot for women and has sided with Mazenda.
- Guardnoid Gash (ガードノイド・ガッシュ Gādonoido Gasshu?): Bias's robot bodyguard, who wields the Giga Phantom monster-enlarging cannon. He dies alongside of Bias inside the Brain Base after losing his right forearm to Yuusuke.
- Guildos of Planet Guild (ギルド星人ギルドス Girudo Seijin Girudosu?) (19-43): A robot secretly built by Bias to spur on Kemp et al, posing as (and believing himself to be) an alien intelligence. He dies after overexerting his body to repeatedly revive the Brain Beast Guild Zuno, after realizing that he is a robot.
- Butchy of Planet Chibuchi (チブチ星人ブッチー Chibuchi Seijin Butchī?) (22-44): An orange pig-like robot secretly built by Bias to spur on Kemp et al (and like Guildos, was made to have others believe he was an alien intelligence). Jocular, likes roller skating and music (he claims to be a karaoke expert). After witnessing Guildos' true robotic form, he doubts his existence, running amok until he is befriended by Megumi, who is by his side until his last moments when Bias decides to detonate Butchy by remote.
- Jimmers (ジンマー Jinmā?): The green-skinned android soldiers with mohawk 'haircuts'. They can assume human form. ("Jinmā" is probably a take on Jin=man and Ma=Machine).
[edit] Brain Beasts (頭脳獣 Zunōjū?)
The Brain Beasts (頭脳獣 Zunōjū?) are monsters born out of a mixture of 'Chaos', the fiery remnants of life in wastelands, and brain cores. They generally lose any particular special abilities after growing to giant size from the Giga Phantom.
