Choudenshi Bioman (超電子バイオマン Chōdenshi Baioman?), translated into English as Super Electronic Bioman, is Toei Company's eighth installment in the Super Sentai series. It was aired on TV Asahi from February 4, 1984 to January 26, 1985, with a total of 51 episodes, as well as a movie.
Choudenshi Bioman was the first Super Sentai to do many things that would become common place in later installments. Bioman was the first series to have two women on the team at once, and the first to feature a female hero in yellow; she was eventually killed, making Bioman the first series to kill off a female hero. However, Bioman was fairly unique in that the man-sized monsters fought early each episode were not the same as the large monsters fought later in the episodes.

[edit] Plot
Many centuries ago, the android Peebo and the Bio Robo came to Earth from the fallen Bio Star. The Bio Robo showered five people with the Bio Particles, which would be passed on to later generations. In the present day, Doctor Man and his Shin Teikoku (New Empire) Gear threaten the world. Peebo must find the descendants of the original five descendants to form the Choudenshi (Super Electronic Squadron) Bioman.
[edit] Characters
[edit] Biomen
The Biomen are the descendants of five people showered with Bio Particles centuries ago. They are found by Peebo in modern times and given Techno Braces (テクノブレス Tekuno Buresu?) to communicate and transform. To transform individually they call their color and number and to transform as a group they call Bioman. Along with their Bio Swords (バイオソード Baio Sōdo?), a versitile sidearm with sword, dagger, and blaster modes, the Biomen are fairly unique in that they have a variety of team attacks, including the Bio Electron Beam (バイオエレクトロビーム Baio Erekutoron Bīmu?), and the Miracle Laser (ミラクルレーザー Mirakuru Rēzā?).
- Shirou Gou (郷史朗 Gō Shirō?)/Red One (レッドワン Reddo Wan?)
- At 24, he is the pilot of the first Japanese space shuttle. Unfortunately, he gets caught in the crossfire just as the Gear begins the invasion. In him, passion and responsibility unite in an unusual combination. He grew up believing that his father was dead. However, after meeting Professor Shibata, even he is not so sure. Armed with Fire Sword (ファイヤーソード Faiyā Sōdo?) and Spark Sword (スパークソード Supāku Sōdo?), and using the Super Electronic Radar (超電子レーダー Chōdenshi Rēdā?) special attack.
- Shingo Takasugi (高杉真吾 Takasugi Shingo?)/Green Two (グリーンツー Gurīn Tsū?)
- He is a 23-year-old race car driver. Shingo can be very tough to enemies yet very kind to children, for whom he has a soft spot. Yet despite his bravado, there are times when he doubts his own abilities. Yet despite these doubts, He knows what he must do and does them as well as possible. He is the designated driver of the Bio Turbo. Armed with Hurricane Sword (ハリケーンソード Harikēn Sōdo?) and Green Boomerang (グリーンブメラング Gurīn Bumerangu?), as well as Super Electronic Scope (超電子スコープ Chōdenshi Sukōpu?) and Break Action (ブレイクアクション Bureiku Akushon?) special attacks.
- Ryuuta Nanbara (南原竜太 Nanbara Ryūta?)/Blue Three (ブルースリー Burū Surī?)
- A water sportsman who, at 19 years of age, is boyish and adventurous; he loves to explore and discover things new. His years of diving have made him very nimble; thus, he is very skilled in stealth techniques. He wields the Super Electronic Ear (超電子イヤー Chōdenshi Iyā?) and Elec-Sword (エレキソード Ereki Sōdo?). His special attack is Super Sky Diving (スーパースカイダイビング Sūpā Sukai Daibingu?).
- Mika Koizumi (小泉ミカ Koizumi Mika?, 1-9)/Yellow Four I (1初代イエローフォー Shodai Ierō Fō?, 1-10)
- A photographer who dreams of following in her brother's footseps to photograph the wildlife in Africa. Initially, she is hesitant to join the Bioman team. However, she is convinced when she realizes that if she does not fight, then the animals in Africa that she loves will eventually be in danger. She was killed by repeated Anti-Bio Particle blasts from the Bio Killer Gun which Peebo later recalls during Silver's first appearance. Her weapon was the Thunder Sword (サンダーソード Sandā Sōdo?). Her special attacks were Super Electronic Holography (超電子ホログラフィ Chōdenshi Horogurafi?) and Yellow Flash.
- Jun Yabuki (矢吹ジュン Yabuki Jun?)/Yellow Four II (2代目イエローフォー Nidaime Ierō Fō?, 11-51)
- An Olympic archer. 19 years old. After watching the Bioman in action, she tries to join them but is initially refused, even though Mika Koizumi had just died; the others were looking for another descendant of the original five who were bombarded with the Bio Particles. However, she proves her courage, and it was discovered that she also has Bio Particles. Her weapons are Bio Arrow (バイオアロー Baio Arō?) and Thunder Sword (サンダーソード Sandā Sōdo?). Her special attack is Super Electronic Holography (超電子ホログラフィ Chōdenshi Horogurafi?).
- Hikaru Katsuragi (桂木ひかる Katsuragi Hikaru?)/Pink Five (ピンクファイブ Pinku Faibu?)
- A 20-year-old carnival flutist. Sweet yet strong, and a mistress of disguise. An unusually strong spirit yet with a strong motherly instinct. She plays the flute both to calm her spirits and to strengthen her resolve. She is able to befriend the evil computer Brain and teach him about friendship, which pays off when Brain sacrifices himself to save the Bioman as well as the world from destruction. She wields the Super Electronic Beamlight (超電子ビームライト Chōdenshi Bīmuraito?), Pink Barrier (ピンクバリヤー Pinku Bariyā?), and Laser Sword (レーザーソード Rēzā Sōdo?). Her special attacks are Pink Flash (ピンクフラッシュ Pinku Furasshu?) and Spin Chop (スピンチョップ Supin Choppu?).
[edit] Neo Empire Gear
The Neo Empire Gear (新帝国ギア Shin Teikoku Gia?) was founded and led by the cyborg Doctor Man, from his Neo Grad fortress at the South Pole. The bulk of their forces is composed of five cybernetic monsters known as the Beastnoids, and of generic android soldiers known as the Mecha Clones. Farrah is also assisted by Farrah Cat.
- Doctor Man (ドクターマン Dokutā Man?)
The supreme ruler of the Neo Empire. Once human, he was known as Doctor Kageyama Hideo. He experimented on himself aiming to be the most intelligent being on Earth at the cost of becoming old quite early. To extend his life, he cybernized himself and later apparently became a completely mechanical being. He developed a deep disgust for humanity, and plans to conquer the world with his army of mecha humans.
- Big Three (1-50) - The three android generals who supervise field missions.
- Mason (メイスン Meisun?)
The leader of the Big Three. Murdered Mika Koizumi, the original Yellow Four. He once plotted against Doctor Man himself after he found out Doctor Man was a human being. He is armed with a staff which fires energy bolts. He was later rebuilt and armed with Mason Rockets and Mason Machine Gun. He is the frequent rival of Red One. - Farrah (ファラ Fara?)
The female member of the Big Three, she uses beam weapons and leaves the dirty fighting to Farrah Cat. She often disguises herself as human in her schemes. Later rebuilt and armed with Farrah Fire Storm and Farrah Kiss (blows an explosive flying kiss). - Monster (モンスター Monsutā?)
He is as strong as a whale and less than half as smart. He likes to work with the monster Beast King frequently, though he worked with Messerjuu and Aquagaiger at one point. He was later upgraded and armed with Black Mace, Iron Paw.
- Mason (メイスン Meisun?)
- Farrah Cat (ファラキャット Fara Kyatto?)
Farrah's android bodyguard who does the dirty work. Dressed in black and purple skins, she is is quick, agile and acrobatic. She has claws for weapons and uses twin nunchukus as well. She is Yellow Four's frequent rival. - Mecha Clones (メカクローン Mekakurōn?)
The robotic foot soldiers of the empire in black with silver heads and red eyes. They can be programmed to pilot Mecha Drones or act as laboratory assistants. Others were designed for special purposes.
[edit] Beastnoids
Unlike other Super Sentai series, the monsters Bioman fight do not start small and become giants when defeated. Instead, Gear uses the five Beastnoids, recurring mechanical monsters that fight the Biomen at normal size. Beast King is Monster's underling, and while the other members of Big Three sometimes display a preference for a certain Beastnoid, he is the only one to be designated a "master". In episode 31, all five Beastnoids are present and perform their very own roll-call, similar to the Biomen.
- Psygorn (サイゴーン Saigōn?) - A psychic monster with the ability to spew fire and uses telekinesis. He is the mightiest of all five as he caused serious problems to the Biomen in battle. He was at first working with Farrah but as time passed, he became Mason's closest ally. He is rivals with Red One, Blue Three and Yellow Four.
- Mettzler (メッツラー Mettsurā?) - A one-eyed spy monster with the ability to fire plasma bolts, turn into plasma and create holograms. Farrah's preferred Beastnoid. He is a cunning and dangerous opponent who uses deceptive tactics. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four.
- Beast King (ジュウオウ Jūō?) - He is a gorilla-like monster. Rather clumsy and scatter-brained, he is often there for comic relief and generally works along Monster/Fargo. He was originally dismantled but was rebuilt for his loyalty at the request of his master. He works as the acting leader in the movie. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four.
- Aquaiger (アクアイガー Akuaigā?) - He is a water monster who uses a spear-gun and is armed with Bubble Bombs and Acid Spray. Works with Farrah and Mason most of the time. He is the weakest of the group, and occasionally gets picked upon by the others for his incompetence. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Yellow Four and Pink Five.
- Messer Beast (メッサージュウ Messājū?) - He is a gargoyle-like monster with the ability to fly and armed with supersonic waves and laser energy beams. Works with Farrah and Mason most of the time, although at one point worked with Monster. He is rivals with Red One, Green Two, Blue Three and Yellow Four.
[edit] Others
- Peebo (ピーボ Pībo?) - Peebo is the guardian of the Bio Particles, Bio Robo and Bio Dragon. She came to earth 500 years ago and showered five courageous people with the Bio Particles. Now that Gear has made its move, it is time for Peebo to summon descendants of the original five.
- Bio Hunter Silver (バイオハンター・シルバ Baio Hantā Shiruba?) - A robot from Bio Star programmed to kill anything with the Bio Particles. He was given half of the Bio Particles. He became maniacal and with his mecha, Balzion (バルジオン Barujion?), helped destroy Bio Star. He armed himself with the Nega Bio Energy and travelled to Earth to locate and destroy the other group with the Bio Particles; the Bioman. He is the enemy of both the Bioman and Gear.
- Shinichi Kageyama (蔭山秀一 Kageyama Shinichi?) - Thinking himself an orphan, in reality he is the son of Doctor Man. At first, Doctor Man tries to get him to join Gear, but Shinichi rejects Doctor Man. Eventually, Shinichi finds and joins Doctor Shibata (43-44). Later, he helps the Bioman ultimately defeat Gear. He manages to convince Doctor Man to help them stop the bomb that could destroy the whole Earth through the use of human emotions.
- Professor Shibata (柴田博士 Shibata-hakase?) - A brilliant cybernetics and robotics professor who develops a "conscience circuit" for Gear's Mecha Clones. Later revealed to have a dual identity. Shibata is revealed to be Shirou's biological father.
[edit] Mecha
- Bio Dragon (バイオドラゴン Baio Doragon?) - A carrier ship for Bio Jets One and Two. On the fuselage side, two laser guns are equipped. With its magnetic force crane, it can pick up an inert Bio Robo. It can even transport a fully-formed Bio Robo to the scene of battle.
- Bio Robo (バイオロボ Baio Robo?) - Coming from the Bio Star 500 years ago, it is the Bio Robo that showers five youths with Bio-particles. It is the Bio Robo that also gathers our five protagonists together, literally picking them up like action figures. It is also semi-sentient, showing fear at the arrival of Silver. It is formed from the two Bio Jets when the command "Fusion! Hyper Cross!" (合体!ハイパークロス! Gattai! Haipā Kurosu!?) is given. It is armed with the Super-Maser (スーパーメーザー Sūpā Mēzā?) sword and it destroys monsters with a variety of finishing attacks including, but not limited to, Concentration (コンセントレーション Konsentorēshon?), Comet Cutter (コメットカッター Kometto Kattā?), Chainsaw Cutter (チェーンソーカッター Chēnsō Kattā?), Straight Flush (ストレートフラッシュ Sutorēto Furasshu?), Pinball Sting (ピンボールスティング Pinbōru Sutingu?), and Dashing Beam (ダッシングビーム Dasshingu Bīmu?). It uses a powered up attack, the Bio Particle Cut (バイオ粒子斬り Baio Ryūshi Kiri?) against later monsters.
[edit] Mecha Gigans
The Mecha Gigans (メカジャイガン Meka Jaigan?) are the giant robot monsters sent to battle the Bio Robo. Their names ends with the suffix -kans.
[edit] Neo Mecha Gigans
The Neo Mecha Gigans (ネオメカジャイガン Neo Meka Jaigan?) are the newer, more powerful versions of the Mecha Gigans. Their names ends with the suffix "megas". Unlike the previous generation of robots which were (usually) self-operated, Neo Mecha Gigans are piloted by a member of the Big Three.
