[edit] Summary
This movie takes place after the Drum Island Arc, but before the Alabasta arc. Tony Tony Chopper has joined the Straw Hat Pirates, but he still hasn't found his true place within the crew. He soon realises that if he doesn't become more courageous, he doesn't deserve to be sailing with them. They head for Crown Island, where a grand treasure is said to be hidden, but as a result of large jets of water, the ship is sent flying through the air and Chopper falls onto the island. The King of the animals on Crown Island recently died, and the creatures are looking for a new ruler. When Chopper falls from the sky in an almost deus ex machina fashion, he is instantly declared their new King. As the rest of the crew searches the island for him and the hidden treasure, they find that the island's animals are under attack by people who know the true nature of the afore-mentioned treasure. Will Chopper be able to stand up to them and protect his new subjects? Will he remain as King or return to the Going Merry for more adventures? Exactly what is the mysterious treasure of the island?
[edit] Synopsis
The third movie finds the Straw Hats on their way to Crown Island to search the legendary Golden Crowning Treasure horns. While the rest of the bunch is all for it, Chopper seems very hesitant about it. As the Going Merry gets near the island, geysers suddenly shoot the boat into the sky and over the island. Chopper is thrown off during the ride and lands in the middle of a bunch of animal who can talk and their sole human resident, Mobambi, who believe him to be their next animal king since they think he fell from the heavens. Meanwhile, after the Straw Hats roughly but safely touch down back in the ocean, they begin to search the island for Chopper while marveling at all the strange and exotic animals. But soon run into trouble with a man by the name of Bulter who's looking for the Treasured Horns himself along with his henchmen, President Snake and General Hotdog. After escaping from Butler's Horn Eaters (animals which he controls with his violin), the Straw Hat eventually run into Chopper and find out he's become the island's king. The animals and Mobambi are a little weary of the Straw Hats and Luffy doesn't win points with them either when he asks if they have any meat, not to mention Mobambi keeps insisting that Chopper stay on the island. However their talk is interrupted by an explosion. When all the animals and humans check it out, it's revealed to be Butler again searching through the remains of what was once Mobambi's house and finds a diary containing info on the treasure horns. When he notices Chopper to be the new animal king he summons his Horn Eaters after him.
Chopper diverts Horn Eaters away while the other animals begin to abandon him as they see that Chopper isn't their king as they thought. However Mobambi and the Straw Hats follow after him to help. Zoro and Sanji fight President Snake and General Hotdog while Usopp and Nami deal with the Horn Eaters. Butler catches up to Chopper and threatens to kill him when Mobambi appears with what he's after, the Crowned Treasured Horns to which Butler give chase. Despite Mobambi's best efforts to keep the horns away from him, Butler eventually captures and eats the horns becoming a hulking monster from its power. Chopper and Mobambi then try their best to defeat him but to no avail, and during the fight Butler reveals he was the one who killed Mobambi's father (not a pirate as Mobambi originally thought) which is how Mobambi got stuck on the island in the first place.
The rest of the animals of the island soon come to Mobambi's aid but Butler sends a shockwave to knock them all down. However Luffy soon appears and takes on Bulter, eventually beating him by crushing his horns, thus turning him back into a human before knocking him off the island with a Gomu Gomu no Bazooka. Everyone celebrates though Mobambi thinks he'll be banished from the island for getting the Crowned Treasured Horns destroyed. Much to his surprise however, he is crowned the new Animal King of the island and he and Chopper reaffirm their friendship before the Straw Hats wish Mobambi and the animals goodbye and sail off for their next adventure.

[edit] Trivia
While the One Piece movies are considered non-canon by most fans, this movie seems the least canonical of all, for the following reasons:
- Neither Vivi nor Nico Robin are featured, even though Tony Tony Chopper does feature, a crewmate who was added to the Mugiwara pirates after Vivi and before Robin. If it took place before the Alabasta arc, Vivi would have to be with them, yet if it took place after Alabasta, Robin would be part of the crew. Either that, or Robin hid away in the cabin for the entire duration of the movie.
- Nami's staff is her original wooden one and not the Clima Tact that Usopp made for her before the Alabasta arc, making it even more unlikely that it occurred after Alabasta, and further cementing its non-canonic nature, due to Vivi's noticeable absence.
- The movie also contains a rare instance of mixed pairing in the battles: traditionally, Zoro fights the swordsman, while Sanji battles the martial artist. In this movie it's the other way around - Sanji battles the swordsman, while Zoro duels with the martial artist. Interestingly enough, and though they would never say it to one another usually, each one compliments the other's strength after their respective fights.
