Choke exchange

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A choke exchange is a special telephone prefix which is designed to handle extremely high call volumes. Typical telephone exchanges are designed to handle a small number of incoming connections, usually in the range of 8 connections for each 100 phone lines. A choke exchange has many more incoming connections than a standard telephone exchange and can withstand extremely high call volumes. Choke exchanges are typically used by event ticket vendors and radio stations.

Samples of choke exchanges include the 213-520 prefix in Los Angeles, California and the 202-432 prefix in Washington, DC.
