The ninth and present emanation was recognized at the age of four by HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. Karmapa presented H.E. Khamtrul Rinpoche with three letters detailing the precise location of Drukpa Choegon’s whereabouts, the house, his family names, and the year of his birth. Khamtrul Rinpoche then along with many yogis visited Rinpoche’s yogic parents in the remote Himalayan region of Kinnaur. Rinpoche was enthroned at the age of six in Khampagar monastery, India . He then began his formal education and training which included reading, writing, calligraphy, rituals, sand mandala, visualization, and meditation. At fourteen years of age, Rinpoche was invited to Bhutan by Khamtrul Rinpoche. There Khamtrul Rinpoche transmitted the complete teachings of the Drukpa Kargyu tradition to him. Shortly thereafter Khamtrul Rinpoche passed away at the age of forty five. Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse was still in Bhutan at the time and took on the mantle of teacher until his death in 1995. Rinpoche’s main teacher in this lifetime have been HH Khamtrul Rinpoche, HH Dilgo Khyentse rinpoche, HE Trulshig Adeu Rinpoche, HH Je Khenpo of Bhutan and HE Tulku Orgyen Rinpoche. On the advice of HH Dilgo Khyentse, Rinpoche completed many practices in retreat including Vajrakilaya, Green Tara, Buddha Amitayus, Varapani, Kurukkulle, Padmasambhava, etc. At the age of nineteen Rinpoche began his studies in philosophy which lasted for nine years and at the age of twenty-eight he received the degree of Khenpo (equivalent to a PhD). Drukpa Choegon Rinpoche was then elected spiritual director of the community of 600 Tibetans in Tashi Jong and the surrounding community. During that time, he built a new school for the lamas, renovated temples, provided financial support for the great annual pujas, helped secure a source of clean water for the community, improved education for the monks, improved salaries for the lay workers, inspired young people to work for the community. He also helped the old and needy, started a sponsorship program, and provided funds to help improve the state of the medical clinic. Rinpoche is currently involved with projects including the building of a new monastery in Kullu and the establishment of nunnery in Kinnaur, the place of his birth. In addition, Rinpoche funds the renovation and preservation of many old temples throughout the western Himalayan regions.
