Choctaw Freedmen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Choctaw freedmen were African slaves that were part of the Choctaw Nation. "Freedmen" is one of the terms given to African slaves after slavery was abolished in the United States.
Slaves were a part of European culture which the Choctaws adapted. [1] Moshulatubbee had slaves as did many of the Europeans who married into the Choctaw nation, with the Folsoms and LeFlores among the larger slave owners. [1] Slavery remained in the Choctaw Nation until 1866. Former slaves of the Choctaw Nation would be called the Choctaw Freedmen. The only family of distinct free status in the Choctaw Nation at the time of removal was the Beams family. [1]
