CHOPS

CHOPS is an American hip-hop producer and artist. He is known for using a combination of programmed and live instruments in his work, as opposed to sampling the work of others.

CHOPS began his music career as a member of Mountain Brothers. The group received notability for being one of the first hip-hop groups to feature all Asian American members, as well as critical acclaim for their original music production, which was handled entirely by CHOPS.

From the underground buzz generated by the group and its music, CHOPS was able to begin working with a number of underground artists locally, around the country, and eventually around the world as his name as a producer started to grow.

[edit] Album: Virtuosity

In 2004, CHOPS released the album Virtuosity, which was billed as his debut "producer project," co-released by labels Vocab Records and Goodvibe Recordings. The album featured collaborations with Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, Phil Da Agony of Strong Arm Steady, Bahamadia, and Mystic, among others.

[edit] Mixtapes

After the release of Virtuosity, CHOPS began working with artists on several mixtape projects, including many notable southern rappers. The first was the series It's Going Down which were hosted by Paul Wall, Bun B, and Chamillionaire. The mixtapes included remixes of hit songs by Ludacris, Three-Six Mafia, and Nelly, and in 2005, the series won "Best Mixtape of the Year" at the Southern Entertainment Awards. [1]

Other mixtapes include "National Champs 2006", part of the "It's Going Down" series. This mixtape was hosted by Paul Wall and DJ Clue. [2] CHOPS, along with DJ Clue and DJ Lt. Dan, then carried on the series by releasing a Jay-Z mixtape called "I Came. I Saw. I Conquered."

In 2003, CHOPS produced the music for an ESPN X-Games commercial which featured Snoop Dogg.

From the album Virtuosity, The song "What's F**kin' Wit Us?" was featured on the soundtrack to the movie House of Wax [3]and the song "Git Dat Mutha" was featured on the soundtrack to the video game Project Gotham Racing 3.

A snippet of an unreleased song featuring CHOPS appears in the movie Brown Sugar.

In 2006, CHOPS released a soundtrack album for the feature film Dark on the label Image Entertainment.

CHOPS has produced music for the soundtrack of many TV shows including Speed Channel's Unique Whips, NBC's Victoria Beckham, and MTV television series Rob and Big, Run's House, Parental Control, and Making The Band, among others.

In a recent inteview, CHOPS confirmed that he had completed a track for E-40's upcoming CD "The Ball Street Journal", called "Rollin On Candy". This song also features Paul Wall. [12]
