[edit] Corrections
I have corrected that CCTV is the "only" tv channel in China. In fact there are many other local channels, although all of them are controlled by the government. But still, CCTV is no doubt the most influential, because it can be viewed in the whole country. --Formulax 09:03 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)
[edit] Changes
Changed censorship. Censored means that CCTV wants to say something but the government won't let it. This isn't quite the relationshipn. Roadrunner
Changed statement on government censorship. There are two types of media in China, official and semi-official. All media is subject to government censorship but the semi-official media are not subject to direct government control.
CCTV is "official" media so they aren't merely subject to government censorship, but rather their editorial and news lines are government determined.
[edit] Media situation
Tried to describe the media situation in China. It's basically something *very* different and rather bizarre to most Westerners. The best analogy is to think of a Fortune 500 company. Now we all know that in a Fortune 500 company, everyone works for the good of the company and all of the divisions of the company work in lock step with each other..... Well actually no..... Sometimes the greatest enemy of division A in a company are the folks at division B.
Think about that, and the Chinese media system should make more sense. If you want to really understand the internal politics of the Communist Party of China, don't start with Karl Marx. Start with Dilbert.

[edit] Name
I think the full name of CCTV should be "China Central Television", see [1]. --FallingInLoveWithPitoc 15:35, 18 Oct 2003 (UTC)
- See [2], The winner is: China Central Television. :D --FallingInLoveWithPitoc 15:58, 18 Oct 2003 (UTC)
[edit] Update
I've updated the page and tried to be as objective as reasonably possible when discussing a potentially political topic like CCTV-9.

[edit] CCTV HD
I just came across this and it seems to be an encrypted CCTV High Definition channel. I noticed that this channel is not mentioned in the article, so could somebody who is familiar with this add it? --Fizan 10:19, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- It's WAS experimental. It will broadcast the Beijing 2008 olympics in 1080i50. --Jack Zhang 00:11, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- And as I just found out (as of August 1st), it's only available on Satellite on the ZhongXing-6B satellite (at 115.5 degrees East longitude) using Transponder S20, a TS ID of 16 (D), 4100Mhz, Vertical Polarization, a Data rate of 27.50 and an FEC 3/4. CCTV-HD is on Channel 3430. Best news is that it's public and free (with the exception of the dish and box)! --Jack Zhang 16:03, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Satellite Availability
I believe CCTV-9 is available on DirecTV, channel 455.
[edit] CCTV on PPLive
I don't see CCTV on the list in PPLive. I know it's possible to watch CCTV through PPLive but it's not on the list. Where is it? thanks
[edit] CCTV hosts
Does the list of hosts belong here or on the channel pages? It seems strange that the main names identified with CCTV should be the hosts of CCTV-9, which could be described as an obscure foreign-language channel unavailable to most of the population. I have separated the hosts into two lists, to clarify that CCTV is not dependent on foreign talent on its main shows, but would welcome consensus on further moves. --Matt 00:39, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Broadcast vs. Pay Channels.
The article does not mention which of the CCTV channels are broadcast over the airwaves in China, (or elsewhere), and which are only available through Cable, Satellite, or Fiber Optic Television.
Shouldn't this information be included? Pine 21:50, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:CCTVdotcomlogo.gif
Image:CCTVdotcomlogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
