Talk:Chicago Fire Soccer Club

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notice: reaching the finals is indeed an honor worthy of notice. Society gives notice to not just 1st place, but also 2nd and third place in major events, as shown in the olympics, 2nd and 3rd place are also given awards and showered with praise. Reaching the finals also shows that you are one of the best, if not THE best, in the league. last time I checked being one of the most skilled and highest praised in a pro sports league is what kids dream of. got it? good, cuz i aint gonna stop.

I'd rather see US Open Cup and MLS Cup sections for all the teams, like the Kansas City Wizards page has; if a team reaches the final, that'll show in "Final, 2-3 loss to DC United" rather than as an entry in a runners-up section. that said, some (for-profit) media outlets do count losing a cup final as an "honor" and list it with the other silverware. I prefer Nateji's method too (although I would do it like on national team pages, just say "semifinals", or "first round", because pointing out losses dwells on the negative). It is way cluttering where in the honors section. But second-best out of 10 teams? It is NOT an honor. What's next, we're gonna mention the Atlantic Cup? Give me a break. This is NOT the Olympics, like you say on your talk page. In the Olympics, there are 200 countries and/or numerous athletes. There are 10 -- now 12 -- MLS teams. Talk to any MLS player, do they consider getting to the final an honor? NO. Just winning it. They could care less if they finish second or ninth. I would sure like to see a kid which grows up saying "I want to go to the MLS final and lose it! That will be so great!" --Dryazan 14:43, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Considering that 5 out of the 10 teams (pre season 10) specifically mention reaching the finals on their history section?.

Just might be good to have some info that CANT be found on the team?s website, the first place people would look if they want to dig up some info on a team. Finals, attendance, all time record, stuff that isn?t on DC United, LA?s, or any team?s website. I had to google search for most crap, and it wasn?t all in the same place. Hell, it might make Wikipedia an MLS fan?s first place to look for information on their team. But hey, I?m new, if ya want ill leave this kind of shit to the experts, but I?m just trying to do my part for the community??..

Oh, no problems with that (and _I_ wrote most of those), they are important things in club history, but they should just not be in the honors sections. I am thinking of adding a section to each page which will look something like this:
Year Division Playoffs Open Cup
1996 3rd, East Quarterfinals Did not enter
1997 5th, East Did not qualify Semifinals
1998 3rd, East Quarterfinals Semifinals

etc. If you want to help out with that, or anything else, that is great. Sorry if I came off as all negative. --Dryazan 19:06, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

a year by year analysis of how they did sounds good to me. if ya need any help with that ill be glad to help out, and for the mean time ill be working on attendance, all time record, and stuff like that.

glad we could be friends :)

we have the Major League Soccer 1996 Season (and the like for 97-04) pages, if you really want detailed info on game-by-game attendance and stats i'd suggest a Kansas City Wizards 1996 Season and the like as a better place for those; keep the team pages from being too crowded. i think the way ive got the int'l competition section done on kcw is a bit much, but week-by-week home attedance...

the marketing people do like to point out when the place finish, but that's not a formal "honor" in the same sense the silver ball is a formal honor. i'd say play around with some

  • 1996:rank in conference, place in cup
  • 1997:rank in conference, place in cup

lists till you find a format that makes you happy. Nateji77 14:00, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Article Title

why don't use Chicago Fire Soccer Club Matthew hk 06:54, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree with this. I think Chicago Fire Soccer Club, being the official name of the club, should be used as the title.Greecepwns (#1 Red Bulls Supporter) (talk) 22:58, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Honors formatting

I have reverted the formatting to the Honors section per the football club template. It had been changed 68.100.240.93. I am trying to set this page up as close to the WikiProject on Football as possible. Rballou 00:32, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism & roster

Todd Gava was added to the roster, almost certainly falsely, by a guy with a number of phony roster edits, Anas the Great. Just a heads up. Bill Oaf 07:42, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gutierrez's National Affiliation

Guti was born in Colombia; should his flag be Colombian?

--No, as he has been capped by the USA. --GoHawks4 07:58, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removed nonsense

"The Municipal Flag is also favored for display by fans of the club; similar to the use of the flag of Catalonia for FC Barcelona."

Unless I'm mistaken, no one considers the City of Chicago to be a seperate and distinct nation from the USA. Cdh1984 13:18, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images + Flag

It's not nonsense -- The implication wasn't that fans think that Chicago is a separate nation, it's that they use the city flag a lot which should be pretty obvious

Also, why were all the images removed from this entry and the Section 8 Chicago entry?? They were taken by fans who want them on the pages, so where's the violation?? —Krasny (talkcontribs) 16:59, 14 January 2007 (UTC).

Image:Cf97.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. [edit] history/updates

added paragraph regarding the announcement of new manager Juan Carlos Osorio. Also updated status of Nate Jaqua being traded to Houston and removed vandalism regarding John Guppy's listing.jb 23:10, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

readded The new coach to the coaching chain and added John Guppy as GM. With out a named GM, those duties belong to the president and CEO. Just because you may not like Guppy, doesn't mean the article should have such entries as "This team hasn't had a real GM since 2005"jb 20:53, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Name change proposal- Chicago Fire S.C.

Considering the fact that this is their official title, and in the spirit of having the team further disambiguated with a more professional-looking qualifier than just having soccer in parenthesis. I think that this would be a proper name change for this article. All discussion topics can be moved to the new page to keep continuity and the current title would redirect. Thoughts?
