[edit] Services
The line is a part of the trunk route between Sapporo and southern Hokkaidō. As such, the limited express trains Super Hokuto (スーパー北斗 Sūpā Hokuto?) and Hokuto (北斗?) run between Sapporo and Hakodate once per 1 to 2 hours, as well as Suzuran (すずらん?) between Sapporo and Muroran.
There also are sleeper trains between Honshū and Hokkaidō, such as Hokutosei (北斗星?), Cassiopeia (カシオペア Kashiopea?), Twilight Express (トワイライトエクスプレス Towairaito Ekusupuresu?), or Hamanasu (はまなす?).
The segment between Sapporo and Minami-Chitose is also a part of the trunk route between Sapporo and eastern Hokkaidō. The limited express trains Super Ōzora (スーパーおおぞら Sūpā Ōzora?), Super Tokachi (スーパーとかち Sūpā Tokachi?), Tokachi (とかち?), and Marimo (まりも?) run through.
The rapid train Airport (エアポート Eapōto?) runs once per 15 minutes, functioning as the airport rail link between New Chitose Airport (Shin-Chitose-Kūkō) and Sapporo, Otaru, or Asahikawa. Since Chitose Line goes through the most urbanized area in Hokkaidō, there are roughly 3 to 4 local train services per an hour.
