Chithurst Buddhist Monastery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chithurst Buddhist Monastery (also known as Cittaviveka) is a monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition of the Theravada lineage of Buddhism. It is the largest Theravadin monastic Sangha in the West[1]. It is closely linked with Amaravati Buddhist Monastery which is in the same tradition, although Cittaviveka is much smaller.
It is located in Hampshire in an area of secluded woodland, but a short distance from Petersfield. It was established in 1979 by Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Sumedho, who became the first abbot before establishing Amaravati Buddhist Monastery and becoming the abbot there.
The current abbot is Ajahn Sucitto.
Like Amaravati, the monastery is supported by the lay community and the English Sangha Trust.
