Chintamani is located at 13.4° N 78.07° E.[1] It has an average elevation of 865 metres (2837 feet). This is a Taluk headquarter and part of Chikkaballapura district. It became a part of chikkaballapur district in 2007 when the kolar district was split. The name Chintamani is supposed to be given by a Maratha Warrior who had camped in this place long ago. Some Locals say the town was named after a Local ruler " Chintamani Rao ". The economy is mostly Agri based. Chintamani is famous for Tomato and Mangoes. Srinivaspur an adjoining town 18 kilometers from Chintamani is very famous for Mango production.

Chintamani is also famous for Agarbatti manufacturing and export of the same. Jewellery market is also thriving in this town for many decades now. Chintamani Tomato market is one of the biggest in karnataka. It is also famous for silk, milk and groundnuts.

The people here speak Telugu and Kannada. Kannada remains the official and administrative Language.

The nearest towns from Chintamani are Srinivaspur, Shidlaghatta, Kolar, Bagepalli, Madanapalli (Andhra Pradesh), Berangi Kottakota (Andhra Pradesh). Horsly Hills is a few hours drive from Chintamani. There is a cave temple located on the hill named Ambajidurga which is developed by the ex-home minister Mr Chowda Reddy. Another tourist attraction of chintamani is a place called Kaiwara, which is located about 5 kilometers from Chintamani. Kaiwara is famous for it's temples and a national park. It is believed that this was the place called Ekachakradhipura, which was the place where the pandavas spent a year during their agnaathavaasa.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Chintamani had a population of 65,456. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Chintamani has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 73% and female literacy of 60%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is about 35 miles to the new Bangalore International airport.
