Upon mutual recognition of soverignty in 1972, China provided a long term loan of 100 million yuan to Malta, which in turn was used to build port infrastructure.[1] Trade relations between China and Malta increased markedly in the 2000s, with total amounts of bilateral trade in 2002 nearly doubling as compared to 2001.
