The China University of Petroleum (Chinese: 中国石油大学 Zhōngguó Shíyóu Dàxué) is is one of the major state universities under the jurisdiction of the State Education Ministry. Formerly known as Beijing Petroleum Institute and founded in 1953, it moved to Dongying City, Shandong Province in 1969, with its name changed to East China Petroleum Institute. In 1988 it was renamed The University of Petroleum, consisting of one university in East China and one in Beijing. It ranks among the "211 Project". On January, 2005 its name changed to China University of Petroleum.

China University of Petroleum is an Engineering university that specialized subjects covered oil , petrochemical industry in various fields, in the overall level of domestic lead. Its 5 national key specialties include: Chemical Technology [1], Mineral Resource Prospecting and Exploration [2], Oil-Gas Well Engineering [3], Oil-Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering [4], Oil-Gas Field Development Engineering [5]

China University of Petroleum (East China) [6] is the main part of the UPC. It has two campuses respectively in Dongying and Qingdao. China University of Petroleum (East China) covers an area of 3100 Chinese mu (about 200 hectares) with 650,000 m2 of floor space. The library has a collection of 3.23 million volumes. The university has over 20,000 regular undergraduates, 3,300 postgraduates, 1497 teaching staff, including professors, associate professor of 683 people. The university, now has 54 specialties for undergraduate studies, and it is entitled to confer masters degrees in 99 programs and doctoral degrees in 32 programs. Under its administration there are 26 Research Centers including State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing[7].

China University of Petroleum (Beijing) [8] located in the world famous scenic Changping District, the area close to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs. The university is equipped with the first-class facilities, including a library with a collection of 300,000 books, modernized classrooms, new computer facilities and a comprehensive sports center. CUPB has an academic staff body of 545, including 121 full professors and 128 associate professors. There are 18 State Key Laboratories and 17 other research centers.
