The CRH2 is one of the high-speed train models in China. The CRH2 is a modified E2-1000 Series Shinkansen design, and represents the second Shinkansen train model to be exported, the other being the 700T series for Taiwan High Speed Rail.

Each train consists of 8 cars. The first 3 sets (numbers 2001-2003) were built in Japan, the next 6 sets (2004-2009) were delivered in complete knock down form and assembled by CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock. The remaining 51 sets (2010-2060) were built by Sifang through technology transfer from Japan.

The first train arrived at Qingdao port on March 8, 2006 with little fanfare, and was not even publicized in China. These trains have a maximum operation speed 250 km/h, and started providing high-speed train service from April 18, 2007, the date of the sixth national railway speed-up.

According to Chinese and Japanese media, CRH2 trains started test trials ahead of commercial operation on the Shanghai-Hangzhou and Shanghai-Nanjing lines on January 28, 2007.

The Ministry of Railway in China ordered 60 sets of CRH2 trains from Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan, along with Bombardier's Regina-based CRH1, Velaro-based CRH3 and Pendolino-based CRH5.

At the time of the sixth national railway speed-up, at least 37 CRH2 sets had been delivered by Kawasaki and Sifang [1].

Units with standard compartments were formed as follows:

  • ZE 20xx01 - Driving trailer, second class
  • ZE 20xx02 - Intermediate motor, second class
  • ZE 20xx03 - Intermediate motor, second class
  • ZE 20xx04 - Intermediate trailer with pantograph, second class
  • ZEC 20xx05 - Intermediate trailer, second class with restaurant
  • ZE 20xx06 - Intermediate motor with pantograph, second class
  • ZY 20xx07 - Intermediate motor, first class
  • ZE 20xx00 - Driving trailer, second class

There are some CRH2s using non-standard compartments which consist of more first-class seats. For example, unit CRH2-043 has 4 first-class cars.

Sifang designed a variant of CRH2, also known as CRH2C, which has maximum operating speed up to 300 km/h by removing two intermediate trailer cars with motored cars. The first batch of 300 km/h trains were rolled out from Sifang plant on December 2007, and expected to be running on Beijing-Tianjin Intercity line, along with German CRH3 trains.

During the test on 22 April 2008, CRH2C reached a top speed over 370 km/h on Beijing-Tianjin high-speed rail.[2]
