China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) is a university in Nanjing, China that specializes in the pharmaceutical sciences. Originally the National Pharmaceutical School, it was founded in 1936, and is one of the "211 project" key universities affiliated with Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. CPU was China’s first independent school of pharmacy and one of the largest multi-speciality universities of pharmacy with complete pharmaceutical fields in China.

It is composed of four campuses including Xuanwu campus, Yanziji campus and Zhenjiang campus. The newest campus, Jiangning. Its overall area is 670,000 square meters. CPU consists of 7 schools (School of Pharmacy, School of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, School of Life Science and Technology, School of International Pharmaceutical Business, School of Continuing Education and Zhenjiang Vocational School, School of Basic Sciences), 2 departments (Department of Social Sciences, Department of Physical Education and Department of Foreign Languages), 6 research institutes and 7 research centers.

CPU offers 14 four-year undergraduate specialties as well as 25 master’s programs, 22 doctoral programs and 1 post-doctoral program with 6 disciplines that are approved by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council. There are three key national disciplines: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics and one key provincial discipline - Modern Traditional Chinese Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy. CPU is the only institution that is authorized by the Ministry of Education to admit regular students of pharmaceutical sciences, continuing education students and senior visiting scholars from overseas. It is also one of the educational institutions in the mainland for students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. At present, CPU has more than 18,000 students in different programs of study.

Approved by the Ministry of Education, CPU was established as both "Basic Pharmaceutical Science Base Class" and "National Bio-science and Technology Base Class". Biological Technology Class (Biochemistry advanced class) co-established with Nanjing University, has been recruiting students for 10 successive years. Base class carries out a system that the students with poor performance being replaced by the excellent students from other classes, and about 60% of the students with morality and excellent academic performance will be recommended to continue their master’s degree study or even further.

The university is equipped with facilities for teaching, research and sports. The university has a team of professors and pharmaceutical experts, among whom, 2 are academicians, one from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the other from the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 530 teachers and 800 personnel engaged in scientific research and development, among whom, 40 percent have advanced academic titles.

Apart from normal teaching responsibilities, the university has also undertaken nearly 70 research programs that are financed by the State Key Programs Fund. CPU has also undertaken 300 research subjects that are financed by the State Natural Sciences Fund and the State New Drug Research Funds as well as given by some related state, provincial and municipal departments. Many projects have matched the international level and some have even filled the blanks in the country’s pharmaceutical field.

The university is also active in international academic exchanges. It has made academic exchange agreements with 23 colleges and schools in different countries and regions of the world, including Japan, the United States, Italy and Hong Kong. In addition, it maintains academic relationships with many research institutions and colleges in more than 30 countries and regions.
