July 11, 2005 marked Zheng He's first voyage and has also been dubbed China's Maritime Day.
It marks the 600th anniversary of the ocean voyages of Zheng He, the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) navigator, who, according to researchers, led Chinese fleets on seven ocean voyages as far as America 600 years ago.
The move honors China's commitment to the International Maritime Organization, of which it is a member.
