Established: 1994
Location: Pudong, Shanghai, China

China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) is an international business school located in Shanghai, China. CEIBS is the only independent business school in Mainland China, a unique situation that prompted the Chinese government to designate CEIBS' property as a "Special Education Zone". This is probably the only instance where this term has been used. The school was established in 1994 as a joint venture between the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, in Beijing. It was then moved to Shanghai, where it spent its first years in Shanghai Jiaotong University's Minhang campus. Today CEIBS has its own facilities in Shanghai's Pudong district, a small yet striking complex designed by celebrated architect I. M. Pei.In this project, I.M. Pei combined classical monastic proportions, of European heritage, with Chinese elements.

In its short history, CEIBS has acquired the rank of top MBA programme in Asia-Pacific and 11th in the world, according to the Financial Times (2007 edition). Its EMBA programme, ranked 3rd worldwide by the same publication in 2006, is the largest in the world topping 700 students in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. Its joint venture partners are Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the European Foundation for Management Development.

[edit] Sponsoring Entities

Unlike most major business schools, CEIBS finances itself almost entirely from stipends. It also receives some funding from the European Union and the municipal government of Shanghai.
