Chilhowee Park

Chilhowee Park is a neighborhood located in the east end of Knoxville, Tennessee.It was home to many of the workers of Standard Knitting Mills in the early 1900s. It is bounded by I-40 to the north, Chilhowee Park and Beaman Street to the east, Magnolia Avenue to the south, and Cherry Street to the west. ^[1]

Chilhowee Park is also an 80 acre venue that can accommodate multiple events. It has a 4500 seat amphitheater. In the early pat of the 20th century, August 8 of each year was the only day blacks in Knoxville were allowed to visit the park. On Aug. 8, 1863, Tennessee's "military" Gov. Andrew Johnson freed his personal slaves. During the early 20th century, the day was celebrated by blacks in Tennessee as a holiday. ^[2]
