Chiho Masuda (増田千穂 Masuda Chiho?) is a fictional character from the Variable Geo series and serves as the series' resident ninja character.

[edit] Background

Chiho is a trained ninja and was once the heir apparent to her family's ninja clan. However, she desires a life of freedom and happiness and thusly has run away, becoming a nukenin (lit. "Missing-nin").

When in her waitress uniform or in a fight, Chiho acts exactly as one would expect from a trained assassin. She is cold, to the point, and seemingly emotionless. However, outside of combat, she is an outgoing, energetic young girl.

[edit] Fictional Character History

[edit] Before V.G.

Chiho was born as the heiress and future leader of the Masuda clan, expert assassins and spies who are traditionally trained and highly skilled in ninjitsu. From a young age, Chiho was harshly trained by her grandfather, but secretly desired the freedom to become an ordinary woman. During this time, her only friend was her sparring partner and distant cousin, Kyoko Kirishima. However, the two would be driven apart later in life due to Chiho's ever increasing dislike of life in the shadows, which sharply conflicted with Kyoko's absolute belief in her loyalty to the clan.

Sometime later, Chiho escaped the clan. She traveled into the city to attempt to lead a normal life, but she learned that living on one's own required great amounts of money. In order to earn this money, she entered V.G., but was defeated by Kaori Yanase, whom she later became friends with.

[edit] V.G.: Variable Geo / Advanced V.G.

Chiho enters again, but senses something evil in the shadows. She is defeated by Yuka Takeuchi during the tournament, but comes to respect the other girl's compassion towards others. She would later hear about Yuka's encounter with the Hybrid fighters K-1 and K-2, and, reminded of the way her grandfather had treated her, vowed not to allow anyone who would create fighting machines with no freedom to live.

[edit] Advanced V.G. 2

Chiho is forced into hiding during the latest tournament because Kyoko has come looking for her. After witnessing Kyoko's defeat by Tamao Mitsurugi, Chiho cares for her now unconscious distant relative and attempts to reconcile their differences. She also assists Tamao and Yuka in reaching Miranda Jahana, the mastermind behind the Hybrids.

Although Yuka and Tamao manage to best Miranda in combat, she escapes via a private jet. However, Chiho, anticipating such a move, had already sneaked aboard and was about to kill her, when she is shot in the stomach by Miranda using a hidden gun. Knowing that if Miranda were to escape, she would no doubt cause even more pain and suffering, Chiho contacts Yuka and Tamao via a radio in a car belonging to Reimi Jahana, who had arrived at the airfield where the plane had just taken off from along with Kaori, Kyoko Jun Kubota, and Satomi Yajima.

Chiho emplores the group to combine their powers and destroy the jet and finish Miranda. Although Tamao is hesitant to do so, fearing that Chiho would also be killed, Yuka and Kyoko tell her that as a ninja, Chiho was prepared to give her life to accomplish her goal from the very beginning. The group then focuses all of their ki into a single blast that annihilates the plane, Miranda, and seemingly Chiho as well.

Days later, as Tamao is crying over Chiho's sacrifice at a funeral in her honor, she feels a hand on her shoulder and turns around to find that Chiho is standing right behind her, having managed to escape at the last second.

[edit] Other Appearances

Chiho is also a playable character in V.G. 2: Clash of Cabalistic Goddess, Super V.G., V.G. Custom, and V.G. Max, all of which exist outside of the series' canon.

[edit] Anime

Chiho also appears in a three-part OVA series based on the games. However, contrary to the games, she is completely loyal to her ninja clan. She is voiced in this appearance by Junko Iwao.

She first appears when she is summoned by the clan's master (Presumably her grandfather, although again contrasting with Chiho's in-game background as they behave amicably towards one another) who asks her to conduct an investigation on the Jahana Group, the corporation behind V.G. She responds to his summons even quicker than he had anticipated, and as he faced away to call for her, she managed to refill his cup of green tea in the short time gap.

She is next seen disguised as a technical worker in the Jahana Group's main building. After spying on Reimi Jahana during a business meeting and deciding that there is nothing suspicious about her actions, she encounters another member of her clan, who warns her not to take too many risks. She quips jokingly to him that "It must be hard to baby-sit a spoiled little girl" (This, along with the fact that he refers to Chiho using the term ojousama, which implies that she is something akin to nobility compared to him, hints that she is in fact, the clan's heiress) before moving on with her investigation.

She attempts to spy on Project: Black Goddess being headed by the shady Jahana member Damien, but she is discovered and forced to flee into an elevator after knocking out two armed guards. discarding her disguise, she changes into her waitress uniform and arrives at the building's rooftop garden, where Reimi is engaged in intimately kissing her assistant and lover, Washio. Shocked at seeing this, Chiho inadvertently calls out Reimi's name, alerting the Jahana head to her presence. A brief altercation ensues, and while Chiho is initially able to evade Reimi's attacks, she is caught off guard when Reimi displays an ability that allows her to redirect her own energy blasts in mid-flight, using this to knock Chiho to the floor.

Chiho struggles to her feet, and seeing Reimi in an apparent trance (Chiho returning to her feet after being badly beaten reminded caused Reimi to have a flashback to a similar experience from her youth), uses the momentary distraction to escape through a skylight. However, after a long fall, she finds herself in a dark room where she is forced to battle a partially brainwashed Satomi Yajima. Although Chiho appears to be superior to Satomi at first, Satomi's power briefly surges due to Damien's influence and she is defeated and captured. She comes to a short while later only to be tortured and brainwashed herself by Damien's assistant, Siritahi.

When Yuka, Jun Kubota, and Manami Kusunoki, arrive at the V.G. colisseum in search of Satomi, Chiho is sent to eliminate them. After Jun allows Yuka to move on by attacking Chiho herself, the brainwashed ninja retaliates by using jiujitsu techniques against her. She then attempts to finish off Jun by throwing a Kunai at her, but Jun is shielded by Manami, who is able to slip out of her uniform at the last second and launches a surprise attack on Chiho. Although Chiho is able to dodge Manami at the last second, she is unprepared for a second strike that Jun launches almost immediately afterward and is defeated again.

At the series' end, Chiho recoveres from her brainwashing as the colisseum is being engulfed in a series of explosions. She, Jun, Manami, Reimi, and Kaori all witness the final match between Yuka and Satomi as the series ends.

[edit] Trivia

  • Chiho is fond of movies, and often finds herself emotionally wrapped up in the plot of anything she sees. Due to this, Yuka has stated that Chiho should become an actress herself.
  • In several of her endings throughout the series, Chiho is shown having become a successful actress.
