A chicken sandwich is a delicious, boneless, skinless, breast of chicken on a hamburger bun topped with condiments and trimmings. The breast of chicken can be prepared by either battering and frying the breast or grilling the breast plain, basted in barbecue sauce, or marinated in teriyaki. The usual condiment of choice is mayonnaise, but honey mustard, barbecue sauce, chipotle mayo, and ranch dressing have become popular in recent times. The usual trimmings are lettuce, and tomato. Many restaurants may add bacon, sauteed mushrooms, guacamole, grilled onions, grilled pineapple, or cheese, such as, Swiss, American, Cheddar, Provolone, or Pepper Jack. The chicken sandwich is a staple of fast food, particularly American fast food, competing with hamburgers and fish sandwiches. The chicken sandwich can become a sub sandwich or a wrap with a different type of bread.

Chick-fil-A was the first restaurant to serve a chicken sandwich.^[1] The sandwich is served plain with only pickles on the bun with the fried chicken breast.

The Buffalo chicken sandwich is a fried breast coated in Buffalo wings sauce and topped with either ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing.

In Australia a Chicken Sandwich is known as a Chicken Burger.

The Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich, like many fast food items, has drawn fire for the non-resemblance of the advertised chicken sandwich to the reality. ^[2] McDonald's also pulled its spicy chicken sandwich in 2006 amid weak sales. ^[3] Burger King has its own spicy chicken sandwich, which typically appears on the dollar menu.
