[edit] History
During the 1960s, several Mexican-American Arizona State University (ASU) students from South Phoenix, Arizona were leading a movement to build Chicano pride and take action on problems that plagued their own community. Among them were racial discrimination, ethnic tension, and poverty.
In 1969, the group officially incorporated under the name Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC). Its first major campaign was aimed at bringing attention to the unfair treatment of Chicano students in Phoenix's public school system. The committee announced that Chicano students would not attend classes until the Phoenix school system hired more Latino teachers & counselors and permitted Mexican-American parents to have a voice in matters that affected their children. Forty days after the boycott was launched, school officials agreed to meet the demands.
[edit] Present
CPLC is committed to building stronger, healthier communities as a lead advocate, coalition builder and direct service provider. They promote positive change and self-sufficiency to enhance the quality of life for the benefit of those they serve. Since taking the first bold steps forward in 1969, CPLC has never looked back. During the next 35 years, CPLC transformed itself in to one of the largest community development corporations (CDC's) in the nation, recognized nationally and internationally for its model programs, and applauded for outstanding representation of and service to its constituencies.
CPLC's accomplishments are only a small step in the quest to move their constituents to the forefront of life in America. CPLC's numerous boards of directors, whether serving as an advisory, fundraising, or policymaking board, are committed to moving CPLC even further along in community leadership. CPLC's staff of over 600 see their work as a mission to serve those in need and not just as a job to fulfill. Their tireless work combined with the support of benefactors and partners is what makes CPLC successful.
