[edit] Life

Chicado V foaled in 1950 on the Frank Vessels' ranch in Los Alamitos, California.[1] She was a daughter of Chicaro Bill out of the outstanding broodmare Do Good. Chicaro Bill's dam was a mare named Verna Grace, who was also known as Fair Chance when she raced. Through Chicaro Bill, Chicado V traced to Traveler as well as to the Thoroughbreds Peter Pan and Spearmint.[2] On her dam's side, she traced to Louisiana Quarter Horse bloodlines as well as to Peter McCue[2][3]

As a racehorse, Chicado V ran up a record of three wins, one second, and one third in six starts over two years. She earned a Race Register of Merit in 1952 as well as an AAAT speed rating. She was a stakes race winner and was named the Champion Quarter Running Two Year Old Filly in 1952.[4]

After racing as a two year old and a three year old, she was retired to the broodmare band, where she foaled nine foals. Among those foals was Triple Chick; War Chic - 1958 Champion Quarter Running Two-Year-Old Colt; Table Tennis - 1960 Champion Quarter Running Three-Year-Old Filly; Three Chicks - AQHA Champion; Chicado Chick - AQHA Champion; The Ole Man, and three other foals.[1] Seven of her foals earned their Race Register of Merit with the American Quarter Horse Association, or AQHA.[4]

She died in 1972 and in 2006[5] she was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame.[6]
