The Derby to Bristol Line is the core part of the cross country route from the north west to the south west of England.
It starts at milepost zero south of Derby station and terminates at 121 miles at Westerleigh Junction outside Bristol where it joins the Great Western Main Line into Temple Meads. At Derby it joins the Midland Main Line to Bradford (traditionally) and Leeds.
Historically, it consists of the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway, the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway and the Bristol and Gloucester Railway, although for historical reasons, the line no longer passes through Gloucester. This is served by trains which divert at Barnwood Junction and go on to Cardiff.
It is used by Arriva Cross Country trains, which follow three primary routes:
- Aberdeen to Birmingham New Street and Bristol and Penzance
- Aberdeen to Birmingham New Street and Bournemouth (also Brighton.
- Nottingham to Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central
